Dave - I ran into the same problem with my Dads 97 S10. As it turned out it was an electrical issue vice mechanical.

To make a long story short, I had to change out the ignition switch wiring harness in the steering column.

89 s-10 4X4 Automatic running fine untill yesterday i passed someone and felt funny, after that it only got up to 20 mph the rpm seemed ok or rather the engine revs up but no response from transmission. Any ideas would be most welcomed.- rsmithwick (Feb 11, 2013 8:49 am)

1993 s10 2.8l 5 speed my truck recently started making noises sound like the throwout bearing.when clutched depressed the noise goes away.this morning the transmission popped in 5th gear.the only gear i have now is 4th gear no 1st 2nd 3rd 5th no reverse.the truck will start in nuetral and in any gear.so the clutch should still be good .something to do with the shifter???shaft???any advice.#314 of 319 transmission problem by fbragg
