" What about Pilot? - other than third seat space it is a direct competitor. "

I cross shopped the Pilot. It has way less legroom, particularly in the second row (the FreeStyle has 41" back there). It felt too crampted in the driver's seat.

I traded in a CR-V; I like Honda engineering (and safety). Nevertheless I ended up with a Ford.

Okay, I thought the Pilot was a unibody dsesign with AWD, not a truck on frame design hence more a large car than a truck but maybe I'm wrong. I haven't looked at Explorer type SUVs in a long time - maybe most are unibody now??

I guess I don't look at frame vs unibody design as a comparison factor. The Pilot/Explorer comparison is similar to the CRV/Escape comparison for medium and small SUVs. I've seen Freestyle vs Odyssey and Freestyle vs Pilot comparisons because the Freestyle is such a versatile vehicle and doesn't really fit into either the SUV or minivan niche.

I also agree that the Pilot didn't have enough interior space for me as compared to the Freestyle, plus the Freestyle was more quiet and drove more car-like.

I Honda had a vehicle that could duplicate what my Freestyle has, I would be driving a Honda. However, they don't have such a vehicle.

What's wrong with Oddyssey?

Whichever way you put it, Freestyle is a minivan with low roof. So, Oddyssey gives you more head room.

Some compare the Freestyle to the Odyssey and others to the Pilot. If you look at most of the characteristics of the Freestyle, it leans more towards an SUV then minivan, but it's true that you could compare it with either.

But you could also say, why buy a Pilot when you could buy an Odyssey with more interior space?

Ford offers a minivan (Freestar) to compete (yes, poorly I know) against the Odyssey, an SUV (Explorer) to compete against the Pilot, and the Freestyle to compete against the Honda ??? I think that's why it can be said that the Freestyle doesn't have any direct Honda competition.

Is this the Volvo vs. Honda Safety topic?

For those of you who know about the Volvo vs. Honda safety please enlighten me. I am planning to trade a 2000 CRV for a Pilot but am considering the XC-90 (more luxury, gorgeous car, more $$$). My husband hates that Ford owns Volvo and I am trying to justify the $5-8K cost difference (after incentives). I see a lot of similarities between the two...obviously the Volvo is a higher end car (the interior is like a Swiss Army knife it's so efficient) but when comparing side by side there aren't a lot of safety differences other than boron steel in the Volvo (safety belt pre-tensioners come in the Honda, I believe). Thoughts? Opinions?

I owned an Odyssey for a couple of years. It is a big box on wheels, and I felt like I was driving a tank.

I suspect you haven't actually driven the Freestyle? It doesn't have a low roof at all, and it certainly doesn't drive like a minivan, or I wouldn't have bought it.

Hmm, safety wise, I'd say it was an even match. These two cars are vastly different in ride and feel. I would drive both and then decide.

I have had good reliability with Hondas, but do not have long term information on Volvo reliability.

Not exactly even.
The Pilot doesn't offer the Roll Stability system, nor does it have the Boron reinforced roll cage, seat belt pretensioners for all seating positions or anti wiplash seats.
