Re: Prius Money Factor for January 09 [cmyawn] by Car_man HOST

Hey cmyawn. Unfortunately, what you were told is correct. Southeast Toyota is an independent distributor that uses its own captive finance company, SE Toyota Finance, instead of Toyota Financial Services. SE Toyota is actually a pretty annoying entity. They really only serve to add another middle man to the new vehicle purchase transaction that has to profit from your deal. They usually pack new vehicles with all sorts of annoying, over priced, unnecessary add-ons that consumers in your area have no choice but to get if they want a new Toyota.

I personally am so bothered by SE Toyota's existence that if I lived in the Southeastern U.S. I would choose another brand rather than dealing with them.

Hi Gary. If you choose to, you can take advantage of Toyota's special lease program on the 2009 Prius and go with a zero down lease. Even though manufacturers usually include down payments on their advertised leases, consumers are always free to go with a zero down lease if they want to.

If I was in your situation, I personally would shop around in the New York area for the lowest possible selling price on the Pius that I wanted. Once I found a price that I was comfortable with, I would have the dealer calculate my car's monthly payment using its buy rate lease money factor. Toyota Financial Services' current buy rate lease money factor for the '09 Prius in its New York region is .00151 for consumers who qualify for its Tier 1+ credit tier.

Congratulations on getting your new Prius, LAPRguy. Thanks for taking the time to give back and share the details of your lease with everyone. Lease warranty by jjprius

We just signed papers to lease a 2009 Prius yesterday and just when we thought we were done the finance man tried to sell us a Toyota extra care platinum warranty (3 yr warranty $865). I opted for 15,000 miles per year so I will likely exceed the manufacturer 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. The finance man tried to tell us that the Toyota warranty is great for the 1st year but that Toyota only covers manufacturer defects for the following 2 years. He used an example of heat (we live in Phoenix) causing an air bag sensor or other computer sensor problem which would not be covered by the manufacturer. Has anyone else been offered this and does this make sense to purchase or skip?

Sounds to me like that would be a manufacturing problem. Also sounds like an upsell to me, and I would pass. It was my understanding that Priuses have trouble in the cold, not the heat. So by that dealer's statement, are we to assume that Priuses then have problems in all types of weather?

MF and residual for SoCal by coolacoo

Car_man,

I'm thinking about leasing a prius this month. I am undecided about what package and whether to get the touring model. Can you let me know what the money factor and residuals are for March in Southern California for the various packages and models with 10,000 miles a year? (If you only have the numbers for 12,000 miles, I'll take that.)

FYI these forums are great. I used the information from them last time I leased a car and saved thousands.

Hi coolacoo. I'm glad that you find these forums so helpful. Here's the information that you're looking for. Toyota Financial Services' current Southern California buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2009 Prius with 12,000 miles per year are .00102 and 61%, respectively.

Keep in mind though that TFS publishes residual value percentages for vehicles base MSRPs. It places restrictions upon what options can be residualized, making its effective residuals lower than its published percentages.

Stuck in CA cannot move with Prius Lease by gagrice

A pastor friend is moving to Maui to assume a pastorate. He has a 5 year lease with Toyota. He was informed he cannot take his car to Hawaii on the lease. He cannot afford to finance as he would have to come up with $8k cash. If he stores it the battery will be destroyed after 2 years not running. Any suggestions other than leaving in a bad part of town with the fob on the seat. I already suggested that.

Hi gagrice. That's a tough situation. Has your friend tried to find someone to assume his lease? Banks often allow lessees to transfer their leases to another interested party.

The trick will be finding someone who is willing to assume a five year lease on a Prius. I always advise consumers against leasing for that long. Your friend may find that he has to kick in some extra money out of his own pocket to make his deal attractive enough for someone to be willing to assume it. Sites like swapalease or even Craig's List work well for this sort of transaction.
