Bought a 98 K2500 Silverado 4 years ago cheap as the motor was bad. Had Chevy install a crate stock motor (350), transmission (4L60E) and transfer case (idk). Spent the next two years slowly squaring the mechanics and suspension away.
Just recently had to have Chevy replace their transfer case (which had less than 10,000 miles on it - I didn't drive it much) as the chain was jumping cogs when in 4wd. They also had to repair an oil pan leak and a coolant line leak. Great - all under warranty. They had to pull the front differential to fix the oil leak so due to it's state I got a "new" one from a junkyard and had it put in. I asked them to drive test the tranny because it was "hunting" when it shouldn't in second gear AND it was shifting between 3rd and OD and then back and then back way too much at 35 mph ( cruise control of course). Except when I get it back, less than two miles have been clicked away on the odometer....hmmm. They said it was fine.
Now after all that I have a vibration at 33-38 mph. I can feel it in the steering wheel and in my seat. So I had the wheels balanced, replaced two worn ball joints in the steering linkage, I even put a Contour cam under my truck looking for what the heck was doing it. No luck.
At this point I am a little concerned about the Chev Service and I think I am on my own as they state the truck is fine and it had the vibration before they did anything to it. So I was just racking my brain... Going over the factory chev manuals for 98. And the other day while complaining about all of it, one of my co workers asks me if my drive line was "in phase".
So there you go. Google it. Propeller shaft phasing, drive line phase. It's funny because the Chev factory manual states how important this is. It even has pictures showing all the drive lines and how they should be phased. So why then when I look under my truck, is my drive line 45 degrees off? This is a two piece drive line and it does come apart at the spline but it only goes together one way. So my truck and many, many others roll off the factory floor with out of phase drive lines. W...tf?
So I just got my truck back today from a local drive line place and it feels great. No vibration. They removed my drive line, cut it, phased it, welded it back together, balanced it and reinstalled it. Guy says he does it a lot.
Also on the drive home I noticed the tranny was not shifting back and forth. Could it be that the drive line issue was putting "junk" into the data that shifts the tranny? And the pedal response feels better now. I always felt the truck was a little sluggish but shrugged it off as symptomatic of a 3/4 ton 4x4.
The elliptical (as opposed to perfectly round) rotation of an unbalanced, out of phase drive line robs power and response. I suspect my gas mileage may improve as well. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps some one.

Oh boy, I can tell I'm in for it. Two weeks ago I traded in my 2004 Sierra Crew Cab - man I loved that truck... And bought a new 2011 Sierra Crew Cab. 42 miles on it when I took it off the lot. The next day driving to work I noticed an annoying vibration at 50-55 mph. It's in the seat, pedal, steering wheel. My kids got car sick riding in the back seat... The service guy looked knowingly at the service manager the other day and said to him 'vibration at 50mph'. Now i know why. They tried to tell me it was the tires and I should drive it some more and it will go away. 800 miles on it now two weeks later and it's more noticeable than ever. Dropping it off tomorrow for an 'alignment'. I gotta tell you it sure feels like the tranny or an unbalanced drive shaft... I am more upset than I can express. I have been swindled out of 40k. Won't happen again.

Well, they're keeping my truck for another day or two. It looks like it needs more than just an alignment, but they say there is a fix for it. (There is a GM Tech Bulletin about Suspension Vibration that specifies a fix for this) I sure hope whatever they do takes care of it once and for all... I have to say the service department where I purchased my truck has definitely been helpful so far.

I also have a 2010 Silverado ext. cab that has 17,000 miles on it. The vibration at all speeds began to occur about 4,000 miles ago. So far the dealership has replaced the rear shocks, the tires, checked alignment, and still no resolution. If there is a TSB about this item I will be more than excited to hear what the solution is. Any type of bump, expansion joint, or deviation in the road will cause the entire truck to jounce from left to right. On the expressway going 70 m.p.h you will experience the same excessive bouncing. A cup of coffee in the center console will shake itself right out. There is no excuse for these defect(s) and I will be glad to hear of some sort of resolve. My dealership is about done with being "participative".

Thank you for your patience, although I can understand if it's wearing thin. I am unable to access TSBs as a Customer Service Representative, but hopefully we'll hear more from gmcwoe. In the meantime, if you would like to open a Service Request with us so we can help in working with your dealership towards resolving this, please get in touch via email with more information (your name/Edmunds username, phone and address, the last 8 of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership).
Best,
Sarah
