Always look on the bright side by nyccarguy

So last Friday on My Dad's way to work while waiting at a light to make a left turn, somebody pulls out over a double yellow line to cut off a tractor trailer. In his haste, he swerves and totally takes out the driver's side mirror on my Dad's '07 X5 si. Thankfully my Dad and his 2 passengers (7 month old Great Danes, Mollie & Maddie) were not hurt. By the time My Dad realized what had happened, the guy was a mile down the road. Then a nice roack hits the windshield about 10 minutes later. Bad news. The entire mirror is shot. The windshield has to be replaced. The mirror will be just under $1000 to replace and the windshield will cost about $1500 installed

Needless to say my Dad was less than happy that day. But I always like to look at the bright side of things. Last night he dropped his truck off at the dealer to get fixed. My phone rings and he says "Guess what they gave me as a loaner car?" I say "I don't know, a 328xi wagon?"

Dad: "No"
Me: "an X3?"
Dad: "No"
Me: "Mom's car? (which is an '08 328xi)"
Dad: "Close, a 335xi"
Me: "Are you joking? How's it drive?"
Dad: "I don't know, I'm just getting into it now, but I knew you'd be excited so I had to call and tell you"

Fast forward to today. I was itching to snatch the keys from his desk all AM. We were so busy at work. He eats lunch, I eat lunch. Finally at about 3:30pm in the pouring rain I get a chance.

I'm a big BMW fan. I'm not a horsepower junkie. I favor balance and handling. I've always said that if I get a BMW to replace my Prelude in 5+ years from now it would be a 328i of a 128i. I got into the 335xiA (saddled with 2 options I wouldn't want, AWD & Slushbox) and fired it up. The engine growled to life. I gave the car a little gas and it lunged forward. I was impressed already. I made a few quick turns and found an empty side street and pushed the gas pedal down half way. Instantly the car gained speed, Like a small V8. I felt like the Millenium Falken in Hyper Drive mode. This car will bring out the hooligan in all of us. After a few minutes, I parked. I want more. My next car (if it is a BMW) will have this motor in it. I can't wait to get my hands on a RWD 335i with a 6-Speed stick and Sport Suspension!

When I went on the BMW Susan G. Komen Drive For The Cure, I drove everything they had. The 335 compared to the 330 blew me away. That thing is scary fast and you don't even know it. I don't know how BMW did it, they made the good ole 330i seem like it was a second rate car.

Yep, that turbo 3.0 is a monster. Even better, you can get a dinan chip, keep your warranty, and get 384hp and 421lb-ft.

I'm sure it comes with a mode to make you invisible to cops, too.

Sports Vs Reliability by jmaroun

There's alot of reliability issues being reported for this 335i.
Especially regarding faulty fuel pump, sticky auto-transmissions, and various electrical problems. That's not even mentioning the high engine temperature problem that's supposed to be fixed with an oil cooler. (not everyone gets the oil cooler).

It really worries me, even though I'll be leasing. Reliability has its virtues.
For me, I value a car that brings fun, but also peace of mind, safety, and is hassle free.

I'm seriously considering a 335i for my next lease. It'll be a manual, so the auto transmission problems won't be an issue. I also won't get the navigation nor Premium package which should reduce the electrical complexity of the car. (basically, I'm thinking of only getting the Sports Package..the rest stock).

The real question is regarding the faulty oil pump and over-heating issue.
They say that cars with the Sports package will be issued an oil cooler to solve the high temperature issue, but I still haven't found that stated officially somewhere. A Dinan rep has told me that some 335i's don't come with oil cooler even with the Sports Package. Folks with the faulty oil pump seem to be getting the shaft..some of which must wait an unspecified amount of time for part delivery. Some folks have reported waiting more than a month! Does anyone know the final deal on fuel pump problem?? Will there be a recall?

I tell ya, all this stuff really makes what should be an easy decision difficult.
BMW needs to get its act together on this.

I have a 2008 335i and use it daily in an 'average way' since 11/07. I live in south Florida. I have an automatic and no oil cooler. It has been entirely trouble free and on 90 degree days in stop and go traffic and running 80mph plus across alligator alley, it has never over heated. I too was concerned over the banter here and about regarding the overheating issue. For me, it has been a non-issue while being very sensitive to the temp gauge.

There is little reason to post non-issues but I felt compelled to write this because those numerous past overheating posts (which were legit for the writers) nearly kept me from buying my current ride and missing out on a very satisfying daily experience.

Other than internet boards, where? Consumers Reports? Newpapers? Credible reporting sources? Would you buy stock based on internet recommendations in chat rooms? I don't, why would I listen to owner complaints if I wouldn't buy stock?

I've gotta tell you Joe, I still think you'd be much better served by leasing an Acura TL-S, or a Lexus IS350, or an Infiniti G35. I truly don't think you'll be happy with a BMW 335i.

There's a multitude of serious reliability reports on the 335i.
Here's a few references, and there are tons more.

Yes, I use the internet as a tool when purchasing a car.
Anyone who doesn't is at a huge dissadvantage and is living
in the past. Of course, you can't trust everything you read..but
you can't claim it's all lies either.
