Thanks, Ray80 and Tidester. When the key is turned, nothing at all happens. No clicking, no gas smell, nothing. No lights. And I just came in from trying it again, and lo and behold, the key won't come out. What are the odds it's something to do with the alternator or the starter motor? If the battery did short out like the mechanic said, could that have been caused by a faulty alternator? We need to get this problem solved, so any insight, help, good guesses, etc. you can offer is appreciated! Thanks- Cathy

Cathy, as you may have guessed, there was a reason I asked about the key. I had a similiar thing happen with mine, lights and everything would work until I tried starting it, then nothing and key was stuck. In MY case ( I lived with it and wiggled wires for a long time before I fixed it) there was a bad connection between battery cable and battery (wasn't installed correctly) and sometimes it was ok, sometimes not. Even though the connection may look good it may not be. Have someone check the mating surfaces (on battery in particular) to see if there is any imperfections (on battery it should be smooth). and I'll bet if someone loosens and/or re-installs the cable connections it will start (but may very well fail again if not correct). Also make sure there isn't a problem with hot(red) connection to underhood fuse box to be sure its tight and not corroded (If there was a problem there I think it would still turn over though). Ray

Oh, one other thing to watch for. I believe the plastic rubbery outside of cable sticks out a bit from the metal mounting surface, make sure that rubber part goes OVER the mounting surface on battery, not tucked under some how, or you will never get a good connection.

Aztek Engine Problems by jayme2

I have a 2003 Aztek that has only 83,000 km on it - i've owned it since new and really love it. 1 1/2 years ago GM replaced the manifold intake valve (under warranty) - now this year i had to replace the rocker gasket as my #4 cylinder didn't have any compression (that cost $800) now my #6 cylinder has no compression. So i don't know what to do - how is it that a car that is just 5 years old and doesn't have high kilometers has engine problems - and more than once. GM says they probably won't pay for it - they really need to stand behind their products. I'm really worried that I am going to have more engine problems in the future...anyone else experiencing this?

2002 Aztek 2wd 3.4 will NOT START by svtwhat

Hello everyone,
I hope someone out here can help. My wife purchased a Aztek Fwd 3.4 about 6 months ago, and it's been falling apart since. The major problem now is that it will not start. We had a bad storm and she got stuck in the mud now the abs and trac light will not turn off (I am checking the sensors tomorrow). The next day she was driving down the street and the whole car just turned off/ stopped running in the middle of the road. Try to start it now and still nothing. Key was also stuck in the ignition. (I had to pull the bottom panel from the steering column, and I was able to get the key out). The lights, radio, locks all still work, it just wont start. There is no noise from the starter at all not even a click. Just turn the key & nothing. I checked all cables to the battery, little corrosion nothing major. I cleaned up the corrosion and replaced the battery still will not start. I also got under the Aztek and checked the wires to the starter all of them are clean with no corrosion.
I am leaning towards the BCM, ECM or EBCM?
Anyone with any idea's

Oh by the way I have been doing alot of research on the Aztek and all seems bad! Most seem to fall apart around 50,000 miles.

Ignition Locked jammed by doindiana

I have 2002 Aztek with a jammed ignition lock, the dealership said that it was so jammed that they couldn't get it off the steering column to replace. So they were going to have to replace the entire steering column just to fix the ignition issue, this just seems so b.s. to me. They have said they have tried everything and this is the only fix for this. So instead of a $300-$400 fix, it would be $1200.00 to replace a part that wasn't broke to begin with (steering column). That price is for parts and labor. Has anyone had this issue and how far of a ride our they taking me on???

I have heard of ignition lock getting jammed for sure, but never heard of replacing the whole sterring column. What happened initialy, key got stuck shutting it off, couldn't turn key when trying to start, key turned but wouldn't start, then got stuck?

Have you checked the connection to underhood fuse box? I might also lean towards checking fuses to make sure they are properly seated. Does the key still get stuck, or was that a one time thing?
