I have a 2003 Aztek with a start problem that I have diagnosed to be in the transmission selector unit. When having the start problem it’s enough to press the brake pedal and slightly rock the shifter lever a little bit out of park and back again and the vehicle will start. I disassembled the gear selector unit. There is only one screw hidden under the rear cup holder insert. Inside the unit there is a gear position sensor that likely is a simple mechanical switch. There is a six pin connector connection to this gear position sensor. It has only five wires connected. Two of the inputs are switched battery and the brake pedal pressed signal (it goes low when you press the pedal). If I disconnect the connector with the key already inserted (you can’t remove the key with this connector disconnected) the vehicle always starts. I’m currently trying to figure out how to fix this problem, what need to be replaced or possibly repaired. The sensor is likely a sliding type sensor with bad contacts causing the wrong information to the ECU controlling the start. Anyone else having seen this problem?

I once had a problem with the intake manifold gasket leaking and the cooland went through the harness that connects to the fuel pump in the back. The harness was corroded and needed to be replaced. I had the manifold gasket and the harness fixed and never had a problem so far. I loved the Aztek, and you have to remember that it's getting old, need maintenance, and specially if you bought it used, we call it IOPP meaning inheriting other people's problem.

I had your problem, I found by shear dumb luck the problem that fixed mine. Look under your car on drivers side, just a little behind where the front and rear door meet there are 2 (on my 2002) wire connections that plug into floorboard. The connector was corroded, I sprayed electric cleaner and put some electric gell on it, plugged it in and has worked fine eversince. I did this to both, but the connector with the wires going to the fuel tank was the problem.

won't start - key always stuck by pastfrustrated

We have an '04 AWD, and starting a few months ago the ignition would only turn off half way, the key was stuck, and the battery would be draining. This went on all summer - sometimes the key would come out, sometimes not. Weellll, yesterday the key got stuck and is still stuck. We disconnected the battery last nite to save it; reconnected it this a.m. and now the car will not start at all. It turns over, but will not stay running. I've read about the BCM, and corrosion/wire problems and a Pontiac dealer told me the ignition issue was probably a solenoid in the shift panel. Please help - I am without a vehicle now and cannot afford 2-3 thousand in repairs. My husband is very good at vehicle repair if we could only find a Chiltons or Haines.

My key is out and can be put in the ignition and is sensed because the warning bell goes off. BUT, my steering wheel, brakes, ignition and gear shift is completely locked. The ignition won't turn at all. I checked all the relevant fuses but nothing works? Any suggestions because i don't even know how i would have the car towed in this locked state?
Help!!!!!!!

Aztek won't start... by bugpuncher

Hi everyone, I am new here. We've had our 2001 Aztek for about 6 months. We took it to a Pontiac dealership about 2 months ago for some basic maintenance and the day I drove it home it had a starting issue. I was parked at a store, and it would not start- so I opened the hood and jiggled some wires, and it started. This happened 2-3 more times and the wire-jiggling stopped working. Once, I got a jump start and that got it going. After that, it simply refused to start, and no amount of wire jiggling or jumping helped. My husband took the battery to the auto parts place and they said it was fine. So we had it towed to a shop where they determined there'd been a short inside the battery, and replaced the battery, and it was fine for about a week. Now, it won't start. What could be the root cause? Thanks- Cathy

I think the wire jiggling technique worked the first time only by coincidence.

The problem could be your ignition system. The experts here may be better able to help you out if you could provide a little more detail about the symptoms. E.g., when you say your Aztek won't start does the engine turn over? Do you hear anything? Do you hear clicking noises? Do you smell gasoline?

I have a couple questions in addition to what tidester asked. If I am reading (and understanding correctly) the jiggle the wire thing worked in several cases? If so I would be leaning more to physical battery cable problem or cable connection problem. While a short in the battery is possible (and would require repalcement), it should not have been fixed by jiggling wires like you did to begin with. Have you noticed any problems like key getting locked in ignition when it won't start (may help narrowing down problem)?

Hi Ray80, thanks for the reply. The wire-jiggling worked 3 times, then stopped working. My husband, who is fairly handy, checked the connections to the battery and replaced the positive post because it was corroded- but the car still wouldn't start. I'm trying to remember if the key got stuck in the ignition...I was on the phone with the dealership at the time and had a lot on my mind, so it may have but I don't remember. I think I may try pumping the gas pedal like someone else has said worked for them, and taking out fuse #28 for 20 seconds like someone else (you?) suggested...but even if something like that gets it to start, there has to be a root problem for this weird behavior. What do you think? Thanks- Cathy

Hi Cathy, As Tidester asked, what does it do when you try to start it, does it turn over as it always does but not start, or do you here clicking sound, or does it do nothing? Fuse 28 I don't believe will help in this case.
