that does sound weird!!! Well we have a 98 Sierra with 160,000 miles & have gotten two suggestions. One is it needs a new tranny & the other is take to a mechanic & run a diagnostic on the tranny to see if it is the electric shift sensor. Either way it needs help. We only paid $500.00 for it so it is well worth fixing, the engine is a 350 vortec & it is sound. My husband works is a oilfield driller so it will be a work truck (maybe LOL) Hope this helps. Well the third option could be that there is a UFO by obyone

under that spot in the road....

If it is the tranny you could be looking at a $2K repair bill for a $500 truck with 160K miles.

Can bigger tires hurt the transmission? by shinychevy

My '05 Silverado Z71 came with 265/70/17's and I put on some 275/60/20's about a month ago. They are about 1.4" taller than stock. About a week ago, my truck started vibrating when slowing down, almost like it's not downshifting properly. Could this be caused by slightly taller tires? I put the stock wheels back on, but it still does it.

Bigger tires could hurt the trans and cause accelerated by obyone

brake wear, throw off your odometer and speedometer readings, create harsher ride etc etc.

Why didn't you install 275/55 instead of the 60s? It would've given you the same stock height of the 265/70 profile thus unchanging your odometer and speedometer?

I seriously doubt that the changed caused any damage to the 4L60E. I'd leave the stocks on and take it into the dealer to check out if you're still under warranty.

Not sure if this will help but you could also try and unplug the battery for 30 minutes then reconnecting and trying it again.

Thanks Obyone, I knew it would throw off my speedo, but only about 2.6 MPH when I'm doing 60 MPH. I was going to use 275/55, but I bought a used tire & wheel package on Ebay. I didn't think it could damage the tranny, it worked fine for 3 weeks with the 60's. I've got an appt. at the stealership, and I do have a little bit of warranty left (about 500 kms). I'll try the battery thing, does that reset the computer somehow?

Yes unplugging the battery will cause the computer to reset and since its a 4L60E with the E standing for electronic, it should reset the trans as well.

The larger tire size does one other thing. It increases your warranty mileage period. Not by much but it does increase it...

Do you have stock size tires? Mine does it when coasting from 70 km/h+, and it's even worse if I brake and slow down quicker. I'm getting it checked out at the Chev dealer on Tuesday, I'll let you know what they find.

A good way to check if it is the trans by obyone

is to place the truck in neutral as you slow down. If the vibration still exists then it isn't the trans.

If it starts when you start to brake then it most likely is warped rotors.

Just something to think about.

When we bought our 98 sierra it had one 16" & one 15" tire on the back, we was told that may have been why the tranny went out. We r now changing trannies, so that is something to think about. We have Reverse, 1st, & 2nd.
