Ive got a 96 Chevy 1500 that just rolled over 100k. Went to the store this morning w/no problemns. Came outgot in truck and went to back out and had the awfullest noise from the tranny.  It sounds like when your brakes are completely worn and grinding metal to metal. It does it in rev, 1st, and in o/d but not the other fwd gears. I drove it back home 25 miles and it doesnt slip and shifts fine, just has the noise on take off and when it hits O/d...... anyone had this problem before?

Replying to: bunn (Mar 27, 2007 6:42 am) The dealer doesn't usually fix transmissions, rather they send it out to a transmission shop locally who either repairs it or goes to the junkyard for a used one and overhauls it. So of the $3k you were quoted, a local transmission shop would probably quote you $2k to fix. Doing the math, I'd bet the Dodge dealer is charging at least $1k for his troubles.   Also figure it this way. What does a Dodge tech know about GM trucks? Replying to: bunn (Mar 27, 2007 6:42 am) My 2 cents...Unrelated to this specific issue.    I would be very reluctant to buy a used vehicle from a competitive dealer (GM from Dodge...Ford from GM, Dodge from Ford...etc, etc). Seems to me there is a strong possibility the person that traded in the vehicle changed brands for a reason, such as losing confidence in the brand he had due to a bad experience (Conquest sale). I'm not saying this is always the case, but it would have me suspicious. Just thought I'd share my opinion on this.   I agree that bringing it back to the dealer to have the trans fixed is not the most economical way to do it, unless you are trying to get them to back it up and cover some of the cost. Once they refuse that, I would hightail it to the nearest Transmission shop and have it done by specially trained transmission technicians.

Replying to: obyone (Mar 27, 2007 8:59 am) A certified transmission technician on any product would be qualified to work on just about any automatic, they just may not have the experience dealing with specific problems. In my experience, most dealerships needing to have a competitive model's transmission repaired would send it to an independent transmission shop, or slip in a certified off-the-shelf rebuild.   On the other hand technicians move around. I wouldn't be surprized if a current Dodge or Ford transmission technician hasn't had a TG350, TH400, or a 4L60/80 apart sometime in their life.   Dusty Replies to this message: obyone (Mar 28, 2007 1:26 pm)

Replying to: oomag12 (Mar 18, 2007 6:57 am) With the tranny fried at 42,700 and GM's best offer is half of repair costs, it appears buying GM might not be to intelligent. They(GM)know the legal costs equal or outway the tranny, so their not worried there either. I honestly have been a GM person my entire driving career. But, you know Toyota might not be a bad choice.
