But maybe that's the strategy: get buyers into the showrooms to look at the Fit, then upsell to the Civic.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Civic does not have a telescoping wheel either, right? I know I tried a Civic Si and found pretty much the same issue you are describing. I also had the same problem in my wife's $32k Honda Pilot. Just seems that the telescoping steering wheel is a feature Honda doesn't know exists (although i assume it is present in Acura ... isn't it?). So I don't think Honda is trying to pull any tricks by outfitting the Fit this way ... that's just the way all of their cars are.

Civic has both a telescopic wheel and a seat height adjuster. I was able to find a comfortable position in the Civic, although the seat height adjustment is not as flexible as on cars like the Accent, Rio, and Elantra. I owned two Civics with non-adjustable seat bottoms and the driving position was acceptable. So it's not all of their cars. I think the Fit was designed first and foremost for the home market. But it would be a very easy problem to fix by adding a decent height adjuster.

I should have mentioned the Civic Si I tried was an '04 or '05. Is the telescoping wheel on the '06s?

By the way, I'm 6'5", so not many cars are designed to compensate for me.

Yes, the telescoping wheel is new for 2006.

I was told the driver's seat in both models would be 4 way adjustable - including height.
Maybe the control not in the usual place?

It was not on the sides of the seat or on the front. So I am at a loss as to where they put it if it is there. Maybe someone who owns a Fit or has found the control can help me--if in fact the control is there.

Yes, but the passenger seat is also 4 way adjustable. Is it possible it is just the sliding front to back and the reclining up and down?

I noticed the Jazz in Australia has a height adjuster.

The Japanese version appears to have a rotary knob for adjusting the height.

Thanks to Google's language translation tool, I think I've found something.

If the US Fit's seats are like Japan's, then to adjust the seat height, you plant your butt firmly in the seat, then while pressing on the brake pedal, you rock backwards to pivot the front of the seat upwards.

Here's the translation:
"The operator in order for correct operational attitude to come off, adjusts the seat. Correct operational attitude, when the waist it is applied deeply in the seat, depress the pedal sufficiently without separating the back from the back rest, the attitude which can operate the steering wheel easily it is.

The occupant, to be deep please make sure not to separate the back from the seat and the back rest in the seat. The suicide seat occupant in order for the face and the chest not to get near to the instrument panel the above necessity, lowers the seat to rear.
"

They also have a bunch of disclaimers, about how you can submarine under your seatbelt, if you don't have your seat properly adjusted.

Check out this link, and let me know if I'm understanding it properly.

Wow - I had an old 2 cylinder 2 stroke Suzuki Brute (pre - samurai ) that had seats that adjusted the same way! The mechanism was kinda like a ratched lawn chair's.
They actually worked quite well, but took awhile to learn how to use...

Well that is a relief! Maybe there will be a Fit at my local auto show next month and I can check this out. But I will be disappointed if it is on the Sport model only--I really am interested in the base model.
