The price I paid was MSRP: $16,705 + TTL I added no accessories b/c the sport comes with many already, and I plan to get anything else online for much cheaper. I did a ton of research and test driving before deciding on the Fit. So, when I knew I was ready to buy I used the phone as suggested by John from Texas on this thread. I could have gotten quotes online, but I wanted to know right away exactly what was on the lot b/c I was determined to go home with my Fit in the color I wanted this week. Since I live in a metropolitan area, I called 10 different dealers around town. At first I couldn't believe the prices I was getting! Initially dealers were offering anywhere from $1500-$2000 over MSRP. Two dealers seemed to think they were special for offering only $1000 over MSRP. Several said, "There is no way we're selling this car at MSRP." One even added, "Our owner's brother didn't even buy the car at MSRP." When they wouldn't go for MSRP, that made the conversation easy--I said thanks but no thanks and hung up. Finally I got a dealer to agree to MSRP and they had my #1 color choice on the lot with only 11 miles on it. They sent the offer in email and I scheduled a time to go in. At the dealership I used a spreadsheet from carbuyingtips.com and tried to get them to go below MSRP. I was only asking for about $250 less, which was approx. 5% profit for them over invoice minus factory holdback. That's when the fun began. My salesperson (who was very nice) had to run the numbers by another salesman who came back and said they couldn't go below MSRP. This other salesman was gruff and not pleasant at all. After more haggling, I couldn't get him to budge. The guy said something like, "I was out of the office yesterday and they shouldn't have offered this price to you. We never sell at MSRP, yadda yadda." They wouldn't even throw in the floormats. If I didn't need the car this week, I probably would have walked away. I'm bummed I couldn't get them to go below MSRP because I think the Fit is over-priced right now for what it is. That being said, it is still a hot car and dealers will get as much as folks are willing to pay for it. I matched the Edmunds TMV price for my area code, so I guess I did ok in the end. (Also, I made sure that the financing was fair and had Honda compete with the bank I was pre-approved for which led to a pretty good APR). |

Replying to: compactconvert (Sep 29, 2007 5:47 pm) This dopey infatuation with free oil change, floormats etc has cost people thousands, especially on higher priced vehicles. Good luck --jjf The negotiating was on the phone, it was not a lengthy conversation, and the salesguy hinted verbally that he could perhaps get a bit lower than MSRP ($16,665, I think, was the number). Of course, in writing, all I had was MSRP so I knew that I had to be ok with that price going in. Based on the conversation, I don't think it's strange that I went there expecting to talk them down a little bit. I'm not disappointed in the car or the final price paid b/c I was prepared for that possibility. I'm more disappointed in myself for not being a better negotiator! So many of the posters on this forum talk about accessories being thrown into the final deal--floormats, for example are quite common. So, the fact that I didn't even get that seems lame. Don't get me wrong--I'm happy with the car, but the whole car buying experience was a pain. |

Put down a $500 deposit yesterday for a 2008 Fit Sport 5M at the following prices: MSRP - $15905 Options - $900, including Environmental package + Tint + Splash guards + wheel locks + cargo tray TTL extra My question is, am I paying too much for the options? I can get the wheel locks & cargo tray for $114 online, the tint for $200 after-market, but the splash guards for the Sport trim are not available online and I don't know how much cheaper the environmental package can be. Should I reject all the options?

Probably paint and fabric protection stuff that you don't really need. If this is stuff that you don't want, see if you can get the car without it. If not, check around to some other dealerships and try to find someone that will get you the car you want without all the stuff you don't. I bought mine in February, and it took a while to find one that didn't have upgraded tires, pinstripes, and all kinds of other useless stuff. It just takes time and effort to find them. |

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of negotiations with several dealers - they all seem to have plenty of Fits. A dealer is offering me 16070 on the car including the destination charge - so 635 off. From Edmunds TMV that looks like a good price - what do you guys think? And do you think I have more room for negotiation? |

Here's my buying experience. I utilized the edmunds and kbb website to poll the local dealerships for 2007s. Most of the local dealerships replied with the quotes of MSRP. I received a phone call from one dealership that did not have what I wanted but was willing to sell me the car at 17,400 OTD for a 2007 and 17,600 OTD for the 2008. I used this price as leverage to purchase the car at the dealership that I had bought my 2 previous cars, Hardin Honda. Here's what I was able to negotiate: Price: 15,929 TTL: 1,471 OTD: 17,400 I did not include any additional options or the extended warranty. The dealership quote honda care for 8yr 100k, was 1,800, retailed at 2,500.(ChaChing). I've decided to order the additional options and extended warranty online. Several things sped up the process and prevented the multiple sales manager tag teaming. First, I told them I am a repeat customer. Second, I made the offer and mentioned that I had an appointment later that same day at the other dealership that quoted me that price. Thank you to all posters on this forum. The advice and tips really helped me. Good luck to all you future FIT buyers.
