Overall on two-day, two-night camping trip: 659 mi / 26.89 gal = 24.5 mpg. Overall fuel use to date since purchase: 12,853 mi / 670.6 gal = 19.2 mpg. The last result suggests that the mpg of the XC90 3.2 will increase strongly with lowering of the speed. Steady driving on interstate highways (but not extreme hypermiling) at 60 mph, with nothing on roof might give ~26 - 27 mpg.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/automobiles/03OCTANE.html I will still use a minimum of 91 octane AKI in our non-turbo Volvos. Suppose the knock sensor fails? The slight savings in fuel costs are not worth it to me. Of course if I would stop at a station in the boonies I would not hesitate to use 87 to get me where I needed to go. 89 octane might be the best fuel for a driver (like me) who doesn't push the vehicle to anywhere near its upper power levels. This would provide a safety factor against the fuel being below 87 octane, and save some money. I'm going to think about it. Lately I have been using 93, which bugs me. My area stocks 87, 89, and 93, and I used to deliver equal vols of 89 and 93 to get 91. But recently I have had problems with the fuel pumps not allowing me to dispense two different fuels in quick succession on my credit card. |

2007 Fuel consumption records (gas pump) for 2007 Volvo XC90 3.2 FWD, purchased April, 2007. Note: Mpg values of 16 mpg and below were for the entire tank consumed on very short urban trips. The higher mpg for 2008 could be real improvement after breakin, but is more likely due to a smaller proportion of very short urban trips and changes in driving practices in an attempt to get the best possible fuel economy. Unless otherwise stated the fuel is generally premium, 91 or 93 octane AKI. Tires are 235/65-17 Michelin 4x4 Synchrone (max infl pressure 51 psi) inflated to 40 psi. Driving style is careful, but no drafting on semis or other "hypermiling" techniques except keeping speed as constant as possible and generally not exceeding 70 mph. 17.8 mpg 5-02-2007 13.0 mpg 5-22-2007 17.8 mpg 5-28-2007 Road trip: Dallas to Gulfport MS and return 22.8 mpg 5-30-2008 on road trip with 91 octane AKI from previous fillup 21.6 mpg 6-02-2007 on road trip with 93 octane from prev fillup 22.7 mpg 6-04-2007 on road trip 23.8 mpg 6-05-2008 on road trip 25.7 mpg 6-05-2007 after last leg of road trip, all interstate hwy, odometer 2322 mi; Ave mpg for road trip: 1550 mi / 66.75 gal = 23.2 mpg. 18.7 mpg 6-14-2007 15.2 mpg 7-03-2007 16.0 mpg 7-16-2007 16.1 mpg 7-25-2007 16.9 mpg 8-10-2007 14.9 mpg 8-24-2007 16.6 mpg 9-12-2007 12.9 mpg 10-02-2007 21.4 mpg 10-08-2007 20.1 mpg 10-20-2007 19.9 mpg 10-24-2007 14.9 mpg 11-10-2007 20.7 mpg 11-16-2007 19.7 mpg 11-28-2007 21.8 mpg 12-03-2007 19.8 mpg 12-11-2007 18.9 mpg (computer 19.3 mpg) 12-22-2007 20.5 mpg (computer 21.4 mpg) 12-23-2007 22.6 mpg (computer 22.8 mpg) 12-30-2007 (Overall mpg since purchase: 7251 mi / 385.2 gal = 18.8 mpg.
