Car Safety

Its not always about ability, in fact I don't thing the biggest issues are. Two words, consideration and focus. Name one world class driver you'd like to see driving on the freeway the same way they drive on the track. And while evertone allows themselved to get distracted while driving from time to time, some are distracted as a rule (drunks and people with cell phones).

to be totally banned while driving. A cop should let it go if the person is pulled over to the side of the street while talking on their cellphone but talking on one while driving doesn't work!
It's like a trip back to the farm in the 70's the looks on people's faces while they try to talk and drive at the same time. How many times has some dope on a cellphone sat there after a light has turned green and made you miss being able to go because they're sitting there with this stupid look on their face with a stupid cell phone to their ear?
More times than I'd like to mention, uh-huh.

...than any other segment of the population, due to their inexperience. There's a new book, "Crashproof Your Kids," that will help cut down on the number of crashes out there. See http://www.crashproofyourkids.com/.

If you want to be around good drivers.
A new survey found Miami to be the worst of the worst cities when it comes to road rage.
The "In The Driver's Seat Road Rage Survey," commissioned by the national auto club AutoVantage, found Miami drivers to be the least courteous in the country.
According to the survey, some of the common road rage triggers in Miami include speeding, tailgating, cutting into traffic and having parking places stolen. Drivers in Miami are often angered by tailgating, with 63 percent of drivers saying they see the behavior daily

outlawing cell phones while actually driving the vehicle.
I don't have any problem with someone talking on their cell phones parked over to the side of the road but this chatting about nonsense while drifting all over the place at the wheel with that stoned, far-away look in their eye is obnoxious and, unfortunately, too many people have been injured and even killed from this problem already.
Ban 'em while driving in all 50 states now!

I'll give a hearty AMEN to that. Including handsfree bluetooth etc.

As a former long haul truck driver, I also learned safe driving. An advantage of aiming way down the road, you're able to react much sooner. Also, looking way down the road keeps the vehicle centered in the lane. Car drivers can use the same techniques. It has saved me a few times. The current rash of truck accidents I blame on the companies that tell the drivers- Either get the product there when we want it, or we'll hire someone else. So, these guys are forced to drive beyond their safe driving times, and some probably take things like bennies to stay awake. One of the reasons I got out of the business.

Cool..a real truck driver; always interesting to hear from professionals.
From your days on the road, what sort of bad driving from passenger vehicles was the most problematic for you?

I had seen drivers cut in front of me after passing that were so close that I was afraid they would clip the front end of the truck. As you can imagine when you pulling that much weight on a truck (80,000 lbs) there is not a lot of room for error. If I had reacted and hit the brakes I could have jackknifed the truck and you could imagine the carnage then. I would just let off the accelerator, and hope for the best, and sometimes blow the airhorn at them. The other bad part was when they would get behind me very close. Occassionally I would catch them in the mirror following closely. I used to think: Well, if I have to stop quickly, you'll be up my trailer.
