You could be absolutely correct. I have never driven a 3, so it could be noisier than the Civic for all I know. I also agree with the post that states that the Corolla is probably the quietest. Toyotas are usually rock solid and quiet. Although this usually comes at the price of feeling "disconnected" from the driving experience. Totally off topic, but I just drove my mom's (age 67) 2001 Celica GT-S with 23000 miles on it. What a piece of crap. The engine was loud, underpowered and that thing rattled like an 84 Camaro Z28. Wasn't at all impressed with the handling either. I could not believe it was a Toyota. My Civic felt like a combination of a Porche (handling) and an Mercedes (quietness) after driving the Celica. Maybe I should drive her car more often!

I'll just assume that you didn't wind out the engine. It's only adequate at low-revs (not that different from the Civic Si), but takes off above 6,000 RPM. Of course, not many drive at that RPM often!

You're right, I believe. Toyotas tend to have good isolation relative to their competitors, which is both good and bad, depending on what you're after.
 
I'd really suggest driving the 3, with both the 16" wheels and the 17" wheels. Personally, I think I'd have a hard time springing for brand new tires on a brand new car, just to fix a noise issue (if I had an issue with it, that is... you may not!).
 
The best advice I can give is to check them all out for yourself, and take our advice with a grain of salt!

I can honestly say that I'm not exactly thrilled with needing to buy new tires for my car, that said, few cars on the market today come stock with a tire and wheel set-up that I like, errr, at least without either ordering the car from the factory and/or paying for pricey dealer upgrades. So with that said, $500 for a new set of skins is actually much cheaper than the wheel and tire package I would have wanted to buy with either the Rabbit or the Civic.
 
FWIW, the fact that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/Ss are so much quieter than the Goodyear Eagle RS-As was an unintended benefit of the tire swap, the real
reason I bought the new tires was for better wet and snow covered road traction. After all, we've gotten over 120" of snow in our town during three of our last six winters, and with snow forecast for this week, I felt I couldn't mess around with "All-Season" tires that receive some of the worst wet and snow reviews I've ever read.

Of late, I've become a fan of Bridgestone tires, especially considering how well they perform in wet situations (I've only driven them in one marginally wintry mix, less than an inch of snow on the ground). I have the Potenza G009 tires on my old Accord and they are wearing very well; no complaints on the wear of my Michelin tires on my 06 Accord either, although I won't replace them with the same tire most likely. I want something a little more comfortable and quiet than these hard-compoud, low-rolling resistance ones.
 
I've drug us off topic I'm afraid... I'm sorry! If you haven't seen photos of the 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback, they're now available. Check em out. I'm not sure since I haven't seen it in person yet, but it seems a little cartoony. The current model doesn't look dated to me, and I much prefer it based on the limited amount of photos I've seen.

I have to agree, the 2010 model looks like the ugly offspring of a Mitsubishi Galant and a Cadillac CTS. Urrg, no thanks, I much prefer the graceful lines of the current Mazda3.

This is what our '05 3s feels like now compared to my '06 Civic LX, which is a quieter car. So everyone has a different opinion of these cars...We still like them both and I must admit the 3s is a looker with the 16" alloys. Mechanically it's been pretty reliable with 53k on the clock and guess we'll be keeping it another couple of years at this point. We just spent over $15k for very nice Hyundai Accent for my middle girl and will probably be getting her older sister an Elantra before the holidays if they raise the rebate. So it looks like the wife and I will be out of the new car buying game for a couple of years...I'm all tapped out .
