Replying to: british_rover (Sep 07, 2009 8:35 am) Last Friday we also had a new addition to our family, a 2 month old puppy that we have named Daisy. She is half poodle and half yorkie and will probably weigh about 4 pounds when fully grown. I have never been a fan of small dogs but my wife and I found this little mutt to be irresistible. As it is beginning to turn out, she is also a tough little broad !!

That makes three major warranty repairs in less than 46,000 miles. The previous two were a blown LF strut and a turbo- both before 26,000 miles. I'm on a roll... After two years I've taken a depreciation hit of nearly 50%($12,000), which means that it will be extremely difficult-if not impossible-to find a nice Bimmer suitable for use as both my daily driver and track rat(Obligatory Sales Frontlines reference). Fezo was right; this is what I get for provoking the wrath of the German car gods. I keep kicking myself for passing on an immaculate CPO Sterling/Imola E46 M3. The only options were the 19" wheels, H-K sound, and Xenons- manual seats, no stupid hole in the roof- the perfect track car... And I wouldn't have to drive 120 miles to get decent service and warranty work. But I'm not bitter. Really.

Replying to: roadburner (Sep 07, 2009 6:05 pm) And I understand you only drive it to church on Sunday. Sad. Speaking of your track needs, I was just watching a show called "Top Gear" from the UK. It gave a very good review of the Mitsubishi EVO. You can find a link in post #1003 of 'Mitsubishi News' forum.

Replying to: percussionist (Sep 08, 2009 2:23 am) Well, I wouldn't worry too much. The VVT problem only affected early 2007 cars. As for the turbo, Mazda is developing a revised PCV system which is supposed to cure the smoking issue. The struts are a weak point, in my opinion; Road & Track also had to replace one on their long term test car. If I keep the car I'd consider fitting Bilsteins, but I can't verify that their struts/shocks will work with the Mazdaspeed's shorter springs. The ultimate solution is to fit Mazdaspeed coilovers, but that's over $2,000 including installation... Got some Blizzaks for winter, so we'll see how that goes. You should be fine. My car did great on Pirelli PZero Nero all-seasons. Are you going with a set of dedicated wheels and tires?

Replying to: oldfarmer50 (Sep 08, 2009 3:14 am) Well, I DO drive it to church... I'll be the first to admit that I drive the car hard, but I don't abuse it. And I can't say that I flog it any harder than my elderly 1995 318ti- which has had essentially zero mechanical issues(less than $500 total) in the fourteen years I've owned it. Speaking of your track needs, I was just watching a show called "Top Gear" from the UK. It gave a very good review of the Mitsubishi EVO. You can find a link in post #1003 of 'Mitsubishi News' forum. Thanks for the link. Believe me, I've thought thought long and hard about an EVO. I really like the new GSR, but everyone tells me that Mitsubishi looks for any excuse to void your warranty. I know of one guy who had his warranty nixed because he hit the rev limiter too many times. There was no evidence that he actually exceeded the maximum engine speed- he simply bounced off the limiter. As for used cars, you have to be extremely picky; far too many cars have fallen in with the Fast and Furious crowd and have been beaten to death. Ditto to all the above with regards to the Subie WRX STi. |
