If you were about to buy a car and you felt like you were being taken advantage of why would you complete the transaction?

No problem...you can ask any questions...I just ask that it be done in a respectful way, which you have always done. You could be right from your point of view, but you haven't convinced me.

Sorry for the delay in answering, lots of things came up at work today.

If I was being charged full MSRP and I was going to get $4500 for my clunker, I think I would walk. But, I have bought a number of cars over the years. Some poor guy, who has never haggled over buying a car, brings in his 12 year old clunker which he thought he would have to pay to get it towed in, meets Mr. Sharpie behind the desk, who tells him he is going to get $4500 for his worthless piece of metal...the guy will feel he has hit the jackpot. The guy buying the car has never heard of MSRP, he doesn't know cars are almost never sold for full MSRP....he thinks he is getting $4500!

He probably doesn't even know what he is really saving. Even the car salepeople say most people only want to know what their monthly charge will be. These are not sophisticated people. I would even guess many deals were made that were over list price.

if someone thought they were so wronged by buying a car at MSRP during the C4C days then they can wait and buy it at a discount but lose out thousands on the value of their beater trade in.

Good choice, get $4500 from the government on a $20,000 car and at least get it for $16500, because the dealer has me cornered.
OR
Make a point and wait until after and pay $18,000 to make a point.

Thanks for the choice.

Hopefully the work things were good and not bad!

Back to your poor guy.

In this case he likely is getting $4500! This same customer coming any other time of the year likely pay MSRP (or even more).

So based on his inability to negotiate during normal times he would pay MSRP and get maybe $100 for the old clunker - (wait was this me when I bought my first car?)

Now he pays MSRP and gets $4,500 for the clunker, a net gain of $4,400.

C4C likely would have been harder for you or I because most dealers would be less inclined to bargin off the top, but on the other hand neither you or I were really that excited about and planning to use the program anyway.

Now lets say the clunker was eligible for $4,500 and the dealer recorded a figure that was less (say $2,500) on the paperwork - that would clearly be stealing!

Glad to see you guys didn't rip those customers off. Maybe, driver has renewed faith in the industry now.

That's wonderful news. I hope they didn't sell the new car for MSRP + 10%, after all, we wouldn't want to give up any profit.

Forgive me, I am getting skeptical, I can just imagine what happened;

they got $5000 for the clunker, which the dealer knows he can resell for $8000. And the happy customer just got a $30,000 car for full MSRP that was discounted $4000 before the C4C started.
I will bet $100 the dealer did not lose on any of those deals

when buying a new Chrysler Dodge or Jeep so the savings can be up to about $2800 or so.

But, if you had C4C in place, you could pocket that extra $2800, and the customer would be happy because he still saved ($4500-$2800) $1700.

Nice!

As to C4C, I still see it as a win for consumers under many circumstances.

It is a win for the consumer, but it is a real jackpot for the dealer. He does nothing, and he claims most of the money. The government should have said, make the best deal you can and then we will mail you a check for $2000. They could have saved about half the cost of the program, if they didn't hand over (without even negotiating or beating like a baby seal) $2000 to the dealer.

Right, the dealer is stealing it honestly by charging MSRP.

I have bought about 20 cars over the years, and I have never, ever, paid full MSRP. All of a sudden it is OK to charge full list, because the customer has no choice if he wants to save a few $1000, or because he has never bought a new car (he is traqding in a clunker) and doesn't know how the system works.

You both are correct. I'm making the pain appear more painful. Sorry about that one. Me, watch Beck? Surely you jest!

Its not like the clunker money its self is profit. We fronted the customer $4500 and the Gov gives it back to us.

Just out of curiosity, what is the interest $3 Billion dollars would gain in 30 days. If you think about it, thats how much money dealers did not have in the bank they normaly would have.
