Replying to: jmonroe (Jul 09, 2009 4:47 am) Ever notice that when you buy a new car, all of a sudden you see a lot of them around. Well, er....that is usually the case, but obviously not this time. I have to say, I have been looking for a live one to see what they look like on the road. I am kind of a fan, they look nice, they get great reviews, the car makes sense, but I just haven't seen one on the road. If I was to guess, I think if any one does have the money to buy a luxury car in this difficult economic time (which reminds me, I have seen quite a few new Jaguars), I think those people would go with their true fantasy name brands....which they can probably well afford.....but that's just a guess.

Replying to: driver100 (Jul 09, 2009 5:43 am) I think the lack of sightings is that the styling is so pleasant that they blend in with other high-line cars. If they had a jarring appearance to the taillights or the front fender shape had bubbles over the wheels, etc., then they would get noted. Another factor is "who" buys them. If they are bought by people who spend their day at their office, then those cars aren't going to be seen as often because those cars are parked. If the cars are owned by people running errands in and out through the day those cars are noticed. One black Genesis I saw I would have guessed was a man who spends his day on the road as part of his work. He appeared to be on his cellphone and was driving exactly the speed limit in the right hand lane of three lanes.

Replying to: driver100 (Jul 09, 2009 5:43 am) A Hyundai salesman told me that he sees the Infiniti M as the Gen's major competitor. He freely admits that because he can't offer AWD to buyers cross-shopping the Infiniti against the Genesis, he loses that competition 49 times out of 50. (Around here, almost every Infiniti M that you see is the "x" AWD variant.) |

Replying to: jmonroe (Jul 09, 2009 5:31 am) I was at Belair and Washington Rd, which is Evans I think. Not sure where Martinez and Evans begin and end. If it is any consolation, I also like the 09 Maxima. I think the only one I have seen on the road had a dealer demo plate on it. I too think that buyers in this price range may be a little too squeezed with the economy and thus sales might be soft in the mid-priced segment. Both are winners AFAIAC. |

Replying to: imidazol97 (Jul 09, 2009 5:55 am) HUH, on his cell phone? He must not have had the Tech Package. You can do that hands free with my beauty. Although I’m not really that important enough that I have to talk while driving, I will say that it is a lot safer than holding a phone and yapping while driving. Which is why I hardly ever answered a call with my cell phone before (usually never even turned it on while I was in the car) but now, as long as the phone is on, the Bluetooth takes over. It’s a lot safer like that but then I have to be concerned that people might think I’m talking to myself. I guess I could always say I was singing along with the radio. That reminds me, one of the features of the Tech Package I never gave much thought to is the satellite radio. I can listen to almost commercial free radio and even decide what era of music I’d like to listen to; 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, even sports, news, comedy etc. Pretty nice really. I guess I’m trying to say that car can entertain you in numerous ways not just the driving part. jmonroe

Replying to: jmonroe (Jul 09, 2009 7:29 am) I will second that .. my wife's VUE has XM and it's quite nice to have, especially on road trips. However, we do disagree as to what type station to listen to. On our way back from Arizona, I finally got her to go to sleep in the car and I switched over to the PGA channel and listened to some of the Memorial tournament. Every time I drive her car and I'm by myself, I switch over to the preset stations that I like (though I do switch back to her station when I get home -- I'm trained fairly well, aren't I?). There are a few places where the reception disappears -- most notably, I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. Our subscription is only running about $6.50/month. |

So I get this email from a customer who bought a car here about 8 years ago when our place was under different ownership and management. Since then the ownership changed about 2 times. So he goes on about some unrelated story of where and how he bought cars at dealers other than ours, and how he values their customer service but doesn't go back there cause it's not convenient for him. Ok.. He then writes that when he bought the car from us 8 years ago he made a deal with the manager then to get a discount on his first brake service work. His first brake service should have been no longer than 1 - 2 years into his ownership, or about 6-7 years ago. He was in a week or so ago he wanted that discount, but since we don't have any of that info on file, we gave him a courtesy discount anyways, which probably less than what was promised 8 years ago, but he still got a discount nevertheless after all this time. So he asks in the email that we give him the names of the previous sales person, sales manager, and previous owner, from 8 years ago as well as their contact info so that he can call them and discuss this "case" with them. Huh? Does he realistically think that a previous dealership owner who's probably retired by now sipping pinacolada on the beach, or golfing somewhere, will want to talk to some guy who just remembered he was supposed to get a 25% discount on his service work instead of the 15-20% he got as a courtesy? Does he think the previous owner would even remember? The dealership sells about 1000 cars per year, over 8 years that would be about 8000 vehicles. The dealership owners don't even look at most of the deals that go on on the floor anyways..... It's just funny sometimes what people think and expect. I'm sure he wouldn't want to be bothered if some client of his calls him 5 years into his retirement and asks him why he didn't get the free gift with the trinket he bought from him. |

I know, it wasn’t really free but it makes me feel good to say that because it wasn’t a line item on the sticker. To be honest, I don’t know if it is good for 6 months or a year. I’ve past the 3 month period so I guess it’s safe to say it was longer than that. In talking to my son, when his freebie was about a week from expiring they called him about it and he tried to lead them to a better price but they let him walk. So I’ll have to devise a plan about what to say and how to say it. I guess everything involved with getting a good price when it comes to a car requires some research. When I mentioned to ‘you know who’, that I was going to continue the subscription before it lapsed she said, “we’ll talk about that later”. Hey, it’s my car ain’t it so I get to decide, right?
