Yes, a dealer could be charged with discrimination, if the people they waive the doc fee for are one race, sex, creed, etc, and some minority's are charged.
 

 
You are fogetting one stereo type here guys.... Credit challenged people, they can be any race or sex......

Just out of curiosity;
  
1. what would your typical doc fee be?
  
2. Is it the same for every model, a Sentra and a Maxima?
  
3. What do you estimate are the real costs of preparing the paper work?

1) $295 is what we charge and around $300 is the norm for this market
 
2) The doc fee is a "administartion fee" so it does not matter which vehicle is purchased
 
3) Real costs of paper work.... depneds on how much you think a dealer should charge by the hour for the work of making sure it is all done correctly. I understand most people think that the paper work is printed up in 10 minutes and they think that it is done.... But what you don't see is the behind the scenes stuff. Making sure your insurance agent recieves the appropiate documents, making sure the banks recieve the proper docemnets filled out correctly, the time and effort it takes to work some of the banks to get approvals ( even with 800 credit scores), the time it takes to get the vehicles registered legaly.... now that I think about it maybe we should charge more

Now you are completely off base. If there was collusion in my state all Doc Fees would be the same, but they vary widly. Just another unwarranted attack on dealers. What business are you in?

Babecat did first tell her story on Edmunds Answers and her story was first linked here to try to get some additional help for her (thanks, Boomchek and Greanpea68!).
 
If you'll pardon the generalizations, people who find Answers generally want a quick response to a car problem and may have little interest in carrying on an online conversation with a bunch of strangers (fascinating though you may be ).
 
So I don't think you can tag the one-off label on people who come to the CarSpace forums like this. Some people join and post, some go to Answers, some write a consumer review and vent or laud that way. Who knows what their motives are (but rest assured that shills are easily spotted).

One way to tell if dealers are making profit is whether they want to continue to be in business or not.
 
I noted some dealers fighting being closed by the manufacturer. I have yet to see any dealer throw up hands and just call it quits. There must be ample profit. Therefore I have no sympathy and will continue to say...If you want more profit pay the manufacturer less rather than charging the customer more.
 
My money acquisition fee trumps any dealer fees hands down.

Since according to the franchise agreement, those costs are not negotiable how do you propose to get the manufacturers to charge less for thier product? Looking for a solution, not a statement.

Irrelevant, but to your point - there are PLENTY of dealers that closed dooors in the last year voluntarily. Oldest Chevy dealer in California, our next door Chrysler dealer, local Cadillac dealer, and many more.

And rebates are passed on to the consumer. They are originated by the manufacturer, not the dealer. His statement (if I assumed correctly) sounded like dealers should negotiate invoice pricing from the manufacturer (i.e. pay less for the product).
