A few might be that the 2010s will be out soon and the GM will probably get dropped, and 09s will be even cheaper, if there's any undertakers who haven't grabbed all the black ones. another is there could be some new models available next year that are more up to date, and maybe you should try a Fusion - they are supposed to be pretty competitive (I am supposed to get a rental one in Florida for February - although I never get what I am supposed to get???  ) Since you keep your cars a long time you might want to be sure Ford will make it through the recession/depression which could last from 6 months (not likely) to 1 or 2 years, and some say 3! I am not trying to disuade (please check the spelling for me Richard) you from the GM, I kind of like those old boats, but there's a lot to mull over (mull, mull, mull, there's an interesting word).

Replying to: driver100 (Jan 11, 2009 8:01 am) The fine print usually says something like this: Midsize car - Ford Fusion (or similar) That (or similar) means you can get anything in the same "size class". Rental size classes almost always run smaller than reality, too. The Fusion might actually be considered "Full Size" by rental standards. Long story short - rental companies have no idea what will be on their lot tomorrow, much less in February. However, you can ask them to note your request for a Fusion on the reservation. That way, if one comes in that day, they'll try to hold it for you. Let us know how it drives if you get one - joel, what are your thoughts on the Fusion?

Replying to: driver100 (Jan 11, 2009 8:01 am) The fact that this is the last of the GM's made a definite impact on my thinking. I don't care for owning a car out of production. That's what happened to me last year when I was considering the Solara convertible. I don't know why I pick the ones that are going out of production. Still, I love the Grand Marquis. It isn't totally out of the picture at this point. As you say, there is much to mull over. Yes, you do need another "s" in "dissuade". BTW, I'm not the only one who wants a black car. Mack wrote to me yesterday that they are getting a new Infinity. His wife wanted black but I think that they are going to get a white one in stock. Mack is off the chemo and feeling better. The bad part is that his tumors have begun to grow again. He came down to Duke Hospital to have discussions on some new trial treatments. Some are pretty risky and he has made no decisions. I'm concerned about him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He wanted to be remembered to all of you here. Richard |

Replying to: richard64 (Jan 11, 2009 9:13 am) In watching the local ads in the KC area it appears that the deals are not as good as they were just before the end of the year (and before GM got their bail out money). By GM I mean General Motors, not Grand Marquis. New car buying right now is something you have to be very, very careful with. Some are good deals and some are not. The automotive world is certainly going thru a shake-up right now. Go drive a Hyundai Genesis if you want a nice surprise. |

When shopping be sure to... Forget finding a babysitter. Bring your two year old twins with you! m Make sure one of them has the ability to scream at the top of his lungs. Encourage them to play in the cars that are in the showroom. Show them how to SLAM car doors and make sure they are able to find the horn. It's best if they are hungry and need a diaper change. Show them how their salesperson's calculator can do double duty as a hammer! Bring their filthy scummy car seats so you can fasten them into the four different used cars you want to drive. We just love this! Before leaving (without a car) make sure the chocolate milk one of them brought get's dumped on the salesperson's desk. |
