Thanks Guys! by richard64

Leave it to my wonderful friends at Edmunds to provide the ammunition that I need to purchase a car. I have printed off all of the posts and placed them in my "jipst" briefcase, along with my gold bracelet, three necklaces, and four rings. I'll remember to take my laptop, my cell phone, and my dog. He is good at peeing on waxed floors when out in public. Personally, I like to take an opened can of sardines to munch on while I am there. Also, I'll remember to smoke a cheap pack of cigarettes in my trade on the way to the dealer...with the windows up and the air turned off. In addition, I'll take my wife who can ask questions like, "Why doesn't this Grand Marquis get 35 mpg?" or "Can you put extra vanity mirrors on the head rests for my back seat passengers?" You know what? I may end up getting that Grand Marquis for free!

Good stuff boys!

Look in the rear door jamb (sp?). If there's no switch then there should be a place to put the edge of a key, or a flat head screw driver in to activate this feature.

I believe this feature is standard on all mass produced four doors since the 70s or 80s at least.

Good luck Richard.

When you're done they might even PAY you to drive the damn thing off the lot just to get rid of you.

To show them you mean business, throw the trade in keys on the roof of the dealership yourself!

Wow! You're on a roll -- good stuff.

Given that I buy a car every 4-5 years (one for me, one for my wife), I'll take all this into account in 2012 or thereabouts.

Boom -

That was my assumption as well.

On my car there is a rectangular hole just below the lock mechanism - the service guy shined a light in, but there is nothing to move or flip.

On the 09 there is a rectangular hole as well (clearly part of the manufacturing process), but the 09 has a small latch you can flip to disable the door - aka child lock. This is what I expected to find on my car as it seems to be on every other 4 door.

I will speak to the head service writer at my dealer to see what the deal is.

illustrate what's best about this board, as well as providing useful information in an excellent context.

We're leery of you and you're sick of us. Ain't life grand?!

Well, yes, yes it is. I've definitely taken what's been posted here over the past few years into account when I gird my loins to acquire a new ride. I posted the shortcomings of the particular store I had to deal with last March. Those folks couldn't find any orifice on their bodies with both hands and a magnifying glass.

In a perfect world, one or more of you folks would have been running an Acura store in the Phoenix area.

This is not a perfect world.

just a thought. maybe it's progammable.

edit:
i found this comment doing a google search:
"The back doors are child-lock standard, which means by pulling on the door handle, the doors will not open. The back doors will then only unlock after someone in the front has opened one of their doors (or pushed the unlock button). Now to make sure no one is trapped back there, you can physically pull the knob up on the back doors to unlock them, I guess you just have to hope the kids give-up after trying to open the doors with the handles. On the other hand Richard, there's just as many reasons not to purchase a car at this time. A few might be that the 2010s will be out soon and the GM will probably get dropped, and 09s will be even cheaper, if there's any undertakers who haven't grabbed all the black ones. another is there could be some new models available next year that are more up to date, and maybe you should try a Fusion - they are supposed to be pretty competitive (I am supposed to get a rental one in Florida for February - although I never get what I am supposed to get??? )

Since you keep your cars a long time you might want to be sure Ford will make it through the recession/depression which could last from 6 months (not likely) to 1 or 2 years, and some say 3!
I am not trying to disuade (please check the spelling for me Richard) you from the GM, I kind of like those old boats, but there's a lot to mull over (mull, mull, mull, there's an interesting word).

(I am supposed to get a rental one in Florida for February - although I never get what I am supposed to get??? )

The fine print usually says something like this:

Midsize car - Ford Fusion (or similar)

That (or similar) means you can get anything in the same "size class". Rental size classes almost always run smaller than reality, too. The Fusion might actually be considered "Full Size" by rental standards.

Long story short - rental companies have no idea what will be on their lot tomorrow, much less in February. However, you can ask them to note your request for a Fusion on the reservation. That way, if one comes in that day, they'll try to hold it for you.

Let us know how it drives if you get one - joel, what are your thoughts on the Fusion?
