Replying to: percussionist (Jan 07, 2009 10:42 am) When I bought my Mitsu I called Fitzmall in Annapolis. They had a number of cars like the one I was shopping for $1000 under invoice. Unfortunately, none of them was equipped the way I wanted. They were willing to order but said the price would be invoice + $99 doc +$400 ad fee. This made it more expensive than the local dealer. I asked why the price was $1K less on the in-stock models and was told "those internet cars are all lot queens that we're trying to get rid of". I don't know how the other brands work it but the Mitsu dealer couldn't make it worth a 500 mile drive. |

Replying to: isellhondas (Jan 06, 2009 12:08 pm) It depends on when you got out. The USAA website lists these as groups eligible for membership: Children of USAA members. Active-duty officers and enlisted personnel. National Guard and Selected Reserve officers and enlisted personnel. Officer candidates in commissioning programs (Academy, ROTC, OCS/OTS). Former military personnel: Retired officers and enlisted personnel. Former officers and enlisted personnel who separated on or after 01/01/1996. USAA was established by 3 officers in the 1920's as a way around high insurance costs. It extended membership to the senior enlisted ranks (E-6+) in the mid 90s as indicated above by the date of eligibility for former service members. It now appears all enlisted grades are eligible. If you were still serving in 96 you should be eligible. |

Replying to: peetert (Jan 07, 2009 9:44 am) Randolph is nice. My brother is in Denville and does a lot of work in Jefferson. The old family house is in Butler. I lived a bunch of years there and might end up back there. Morris county is very nice. |

Replying to: jimbres (Jan 07, 2009 12:21 pm) Toyota is closing their plants for 11 days to reduce inventory. I expect most other manufacturers will do so or have already done so, I know the Ford plant in Louisville has. I think the next 3-4 months will be the best time to buy, after that it will be business as usual.

Replying to: jipster (Jan 07, 2009 12:34 pm) I do expect to have some spikes of cars that are debuting this year - like that Fusion Hybrid which is getting tons of good ink. Isn't the new Insight coming out as well? I expect good things there even as I'm amazed that Honda hasn't done better in the hybrid department. So far Toyota has really nailed that. |

Replying to: jmonroe (Jan 07, 2009 10:38 am) I am the same, I don't trust computers more than me, but the fact is it can react and calculate way faster than most of us can. Once you get used to ABS and that weird pumping feeling you do realize it does a better job of stopping than most humans could do. Many cars also now have automatic break reaction. If you put your foot on the break really fast the car knows it and will apply full stopping power. If you think about it, this is a very worthwhile feature. No, I don't own any stock in or own a share of, or knowingly have relatives or friends involved in making parts for the automotive industry. I am like you, drove 3 speed sticks on the column, bald tires, weak breaks, cracked windshields, no seat belts, engine would cut out on hills....I am lucky to still be here! But, because of the other guy and knowing we all have certain limitations, I want every safety device known to man that I can reasonably afford. |

NHTSA concluded that ESC reduces crashes by 35%. Additionally, Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) with stability control are involved in 67% fewer accidents than SUVs without the system. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued its own study in June 2006 showing that up to 10,000 fatal US crashes could be avoided annually if all vehicles were equipped with ESC[26] The IIHS study concluded that ESC reduces the likelihood of all fatal crashes by 43%, fatal single-vehicle crashes by 56%, and fatal single-vehicle rollovers by 77-80%. ESC is described as the most important advance in auto safety since the seat belt by many experts.[27] including Nicole Nason,[28] Administrator of the NHTSA,[29] Jim Guest and David Champion[30] of Consumers Union[31] Max Mosley of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), E-Safety Aware,[32] Csaba Csere, editor of Car and Driver,[33] and Bill Kozyra, CEO of Continental Automotive Systems[29] The European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) "strongly recommends" that people buy cars fitted with stability control.[34] The IIHS and Consumer Reports are so impressed with ESC that vehicles cannot earn their Top Safety Pick ratings without ESC (I am not sure how the GM got 5 stars) To see more and to see how it works go to; electronic stability control Another thing is spending $3000 or so more for a car that will last you at least 10 years is less than $300 a year, so extra cost isn't too much of a factor. I think asking the great salesman from above for some guidance would be wise.....it's a beautiful car but it is a major and important decision to get it right.

Replying to: driver100 (Jan 07, 2009 3:41 pm) give me a car that has an engine that runs, a steering wheel that turns the car at some point, 4 tires with air, and brakes that can actually stop the car after a while. i'll take it from there. the police have tried many different vehicles over the years, but what do they keep buying?
