Replying to: jmonroe (May 12, 2008 6:09 am) However, I’ve heard similar comments from people who came to this GREAT country after living elsewhere so I have to believe this. The only explanation other than the water is, ‘we like to hear what we want to hear’ and because it works most of the time a lot of people don’t want to think. Then we have an economic disruption like the ‘home foreclosure crisis’ we’re in now because people forgot how to think or weren’t paying attention to 5th grade math. You totally nailed it! This is a Great country - big part of its greatness was achieved BECAUSE it made it possible for people without 5th grade math skills rather than shutting them out. It finds a way to make them more productive and engaged for promise of life that is better than their actual paycheck. You and I it's not really true, but they don't. In other places people hear "don't even try". Here they hear e.g. "yes, you can buy $300K house on $35K wage" and they believe it. Since belief is half of achievement, some actually do achieve it. It's one of those great contradictions. Like you said - works most of the time.

The granite itself can take the heat, but the sealant and wax on it cannot. If you damage that, you probably won't even realize it until the next time you spill something harsh on it ... like grease ... and it soaks into the granite. I used to sell cabinets and countertops in one of my former universes. ;b

In all the years we’ve been married, Mrs. jmonroe never did the “hot pot” thing until last summer when she was asked to make potato salad by someone for a cook-out. She dosed off (I wasn’t home. I was at one of the son’s places helping with a home project and it was really hot outside) and when she smelled something burning she jumped up, ran to the stove, still a little groggy and slid the pot onto the Formica top just enough to create a nice little arc from the pot, clear into the dark core material (the top is beige). When I got home she was still very upset with herself and said, “that’s it, I’m never making this again”. Guess what she wants to buy now? I’m surprised she didn’t run out immediately and get one. Heck, it cheaper than a dining room set that we don’t need. To stay on topic, we’ll drive to a counter top place in one of our high mileage machines and we’ll ask that they deliver it in one of their high mileage machines. jmonroe |

Replying to: oldfarmer50 (May 10, 2008 11:40 am) 1. This is our normal slow time of year. 2. Gas prices have killed our used business and are hurting the fringes of our new business. 3. I have a lot of people waiting to hear what the 2009 Range Rover will look like. I was told in the past that the 2009 model will not be the all new body style but we haven't gotten specs for the 2009 Range Rover yet. I have specs for all other 2009 Models except the Range Rover. That tells me something is happening with it but I don't know what. 4. We get a fair amount of business from Stock Market financial people and some of them are really hurting or at least nervous. 5. Our leases are so uncompetitive that an identical MSRP Merc or BMW leases for between 150 and 200 dollars less a month then a competing Land Rover product. You won't get as much content in the German SUV at the same MSRP but you have 150 plus dollars of monthly payment to meet the Land Rover equipment level. An comparably equipped Merc or BMW is still usually over 100 dollars less a month then a Land Rover.
