"And I think Mazda has low retention rates because it's not a full-line manufacturer. At some point, a lot of people decide they want a car "higher up" than a Mazda6. Miata and RX-8 owners may decide they've outgrown sports cars and need something more practical, or visually conservative. Happens to every niche company."

I don't think the whole reason(maybe some)Mazda has low retention rates is because its not a full-line manufacturer. In the mid 90's they fell flat on their face trying to be a direct comptetitor to Toyota. Also, the 6 has been generously discounted because its not selling like Mazda had planned. The interior room its smaller than Altima and Accord. The Rx-8 I think its getting outsold by the 350Z because Nissan has much more of a perception for reliability than Mazda does. Also, Mazda does not have a competitor to the Maxima, Avalon, and LaCrosse.

With the subject of the Miata it has always sold alright

The Aston Martin V8 comes in a 6-speed. I suspect the future convertible model will sneak a few sales from the SL.

I'm sure it will. I'm waiting to a see what U.S. publication has to say about this car, true sports car or GT.

There is no arguing your last point.

I knew you'd agree!

the RX-8 by nippononly

is like riding around on a jet engine, it is that fun. The twin turbo of the last gen was even more fun, but I would never own one - much too hard and expensive to keep running.

Problem with choosing the Mustang GT over the RX-8 is it's another car that's not well rounded. Fast off the line? No question. Probably a couple of seconds faster to 60 than the RX-8, although the quarter mile would be a closer race I think. But the Mustang has poor handling and a sloppy shifter, not to mention no space inside.

Oh, and I agree FWDers should stay out of "Best Sports anything" competitions. :-<

Carguy58, you listed reasons why Mazda does not sell large amounts of cars... which don't answer why Mazda owners don't buy a second Mazda.

Miata and RX-8 owners... sports car owners in general... often move on to either a bigger car or more expensive sports car in the future (ie not a Mazda). People who are happy in their Mazda6, and then grow 3ft taller and/or have 8ft tall kids need an Avalon or something like that, so they have to get a non-Mazda too.

In those ways, being a niche player makes it hard for Mazda (or anyone) to retain customers. Even those customers who are happy with their Mazdas.

Buyers who think Mazdas are unreliable or boring don't get one in the first place, so they don't count towards retention rates.

On balance, I think they did a fine job with the top 10.

Sorry, haven't been following the M3 gestation, as I also am in the minority that appreciates the sedan, which has been gone for a while.

   I would expect a 400HP V8, slotting below the 500HP V10 in the M5.

And I wouldn't expect BMW to repeat the mistake of forgetting the clutch!

I think the 5 is much better-looking than the 3, myself. But the 3 is not a dog. The IS is sexier doh.

Cadillac as the best anything?

Well, Cadillac built the world's only V-16 engine from 1930-1940.

Here is the most exotic Cadillac V16 ever built, this 1937 two-door convertible with a body by Hartmann.

Re-read. I said "as". Not what Cadillac "was" or might have been 70 years ago.

Nice car though. It makes the devolution of GM in the intervening half century all the more sad.

Hard to believe Cadillac was once (literally) the car of Kings.

Cadillac is kind of like a rehabilitated drunkard who is now doing rather well--not from the gutter to the top of the heap exactly, not quite rags to riches, but in a much improved condition in every respect--rebuilding its family, pressed shirt and shined shoes every day....but you just never, ever know if it's going to fall off the wagon and go on a binge of self-destruction again like it 30 years ago. Part of the problem is who Cadillac hangs out with---will someone from GM slip it a fatal bottle of rotgut whiskey? I sure hope not.
