The Mini's quality is light years ahead of what it was in 2002. I'm sure it's quality, at this point, is no worse than a Ford Focus! Take that any way you want to. RX-8 highs: Better looking than a 350Z Slick, 4-person capable interior Strong handling RX-8 lows: Mazda backed Where's the torque? High maintenance? Between it and the Z, I'm takin' the RX. C&D agrees. I'll take a Mini S over both!!! DrFill |

If, or when, BMW wakes up and builds a M5, with 6-SPEED STICK, and NO iDRIVE, that will become my favorite car on Earth. As I am one of the 5 people who think the 5 is the sexiest car in it's class. That's for all you people thinking I am just another Toyotaphile with a High IQ! Of, course, it would not qualify for "10 Best" DrFill

I am particularly interested in this car, because of the sedan version that is suppose to be released. I have looked for a good used 97-98 used M3 sedan, but most of them are high mileage copy's. In the mid 90's they fell flat on their face trying to be a direct comptetitor to Toyota. Also, the 6 has been generously discounted because its not selling like Mazda had planned. The interior room its smaller than Altima and Accord. The Rx-8 I think its getting outsold by the 350Z because Nissan has much more of a perception for reliability than Mazda does. Also, Mazda does not have a competitor to the Maxima, Avalon, and LaCrosse. With the subject of the Miata it has always sold alright

is like riding around on a jet engine, it is that fun. The twin turbo of the last gen was even more fun, but I would never own one - much too hard and expensive to keep running. Problem with choosing the Mustang GT over the RX-8 is it's another car that's not well rounded. Fast off the line? No question. Probably a couple of seconds faster to 60 than the RX-8, although the quarter mile would be a closer race I think. But the Mustang has poor handling and a sloppy shifter, not to mention no space inside. Oh, and I agree FWDers should stay out of "Best Sports anything" competitions. :-< |

Replying to: carguy58 (Dec 12, 2005 8:59 am) Miata and RX-8 owners... sports car owners in general... often move on to either a bigger car or more expensive sports car in the future (ie not a Mazda). People who are happy in their Mazda6, and then grow 3ft taller and/or have 8ft tall kids need an Avalon or something like that, so they have to get a non-Mazda too. In those ways, being a niche player makes it hard for Mazda (or anyone) to retain customers. Even those customers who are happy with their Mazdas. Buyers who think Mazdas are unreliable or boring don't get one in the first place, so they don't count towards retention rates. |

| On balance, I think they did a fine job with the top 10. | |

Sorry, haven't been following the M3 gestation, as I also am in the minority that appreciates the sedan, which has been gone for a while. I would expect a 400HP V8, slotting below the 500HP V10 in the M5. And I wouldn't expect BMW to repeat the mistake of forgetting the clutch! I think the 5 is much better-looking than the 3, myself. But the 3 is not a dog. The IS is sexier doh. DrFill |
