"The Mini reputation for quality control and problems is pretty bad..."

True, but I don't think C&D factors in reliability in anything they do. Besides, poor quality control and problems are part the great British motoring tradition.

"The Mitsubishi EVO is I think rated a bit better than the STi..."

You're absolutely right. If C&D had a "Best Tuner" category they would (or should) have chosen the Mitsu. It is a better all round choice. Personally, I just like the boxy look of the Subie a little better. Plus, having a boxer engine is kinda cool for reasons I just can't justify.

Now as for the Mazda RX8, not even the top 20 list of any car category.

The body style is innovative and the dash looks nice but that rotary engine is not competitive with the alternatives. Who would want a rotary that has no torque, gets 16 miles per gallon, and you have to add oil every 1000 miles. Not me and please Mazda get rid of the rotary concept and put a nice six cylinder engine with 280 horsepower. What is the pleaure of reving a rotary to 8000 RPM if there is no power?

Yes I know the handling is good but the engine and quality problems that the RX8 has faced are a deal breaker for the top ten. And Mazda has terrible customer loyaly, JD Powers scores them at the bottom of the list at 23 percent. The average score was 49 percent. Toyota scored 62 percent.

Well it's pretty hard to justify giving a car a "Best" rating when the Mini is duking it out in the quality basement with Kia and Daewoo...

Some people like what rotaries have to offer. The RX-8 exists for (and because of) them, not you.

And I think Mazda has low retention rates because it's not a full-line manufacturer. At some point, a lot of people decide they want a car "higher up" than a Mazda6. Miata and RX-8 owners may decide they've outgrown sports cars and need something more practical, or visually conservative. Happens to every niche company.

The Mini's quality is light years ahead of what it was in 2002.

I'm sure it's quality, at this point, is no worse than a Ford Focus!

Take that any way you want to.

  RX-8 highs: Better looking than a 350Z
               Slick, 4-person capable interior
               Strong handling

  RX-8 lows: Mazda backed
               Where's the torque?
               High maintenance?

Between it and the Z, I'm takin' the RX. C&D agrees.

  I'll take a Mini S over both!!!

If, or when, BMW wakes up and builds a M5, with 6-SPEED STICK, and NO iDRIVE, that will become my favorite car on Earth. As I am one of the 5 people who think the 5 is the sexiest car in it's class.

That's for all you people thinking I am just another Toyotaphile with a High IQ!

Of, course, it would not qualify for "10 Best"

DrFill,

I am not going to doubt your I.Q. because you seem to be very intellegent. As much as you love BMW, do you have any info. on the new M3.

I am particularly interested in this car, because of the sedan version that is suppose to be released. I have looked for a good used 97-98 used M3 sedan, but most of them are high mileage copy's.

I don't think the whole reason(maybe some)Mazda has low retention rates is because its not a full-line manufacturer. In the mid 90's they fell flat on their face trying to be a direct comptetitor to Toyota. Also, the 6 has been generously discounted because its not selling like Mazda had planned. The interior room its smaller than Altima and Accord. The Rx-8 I think its getting outsold by the 350Z because Nissan has much more of a perception for reliability than Mazda does. Also, Mazda does not have a competitor to the Maxima, Avalon, and LaCrosse.

With the subject of the Miata it has always sold alright

The Aston Martin V8 comes in a 6-speed. I suspect the future convertible model will sneak a few sales from the SL.

I'm sure it will. I'm waiting to a see what U.S. publication has to say about this car, true sports car or GT.

There is no arguing your last point.

I knew you'd agree!

the RX-8 by nippononly
Dec 12, 2005 (12:34 pm)
is like riding around on a jet engine, it is that fun. The twin turbo of the last gen was even more fun, but I would never own one - much too hard and expensive to keep running.

Problem with choosing the Mustang GT over the RX-8 is it's another car that's not well rounded. Fast off the line? No question. Probably a couple of seconds faster to 60 than the RX-8, although the quarter mile would be a closer race I think. But the Mustang has poor handling and a sloppy shifter, not to mention no space inside.

Oh, and I agree FWDers should stay out of "Best Sports anything" competitions. :-<
