Let me guess, you like BMW's!

The Mini Cooper S is a love of mine, and I'm sure twice the car dynamically that the A3 is, but it is so small, it's function is truly super niche.

But I agree with it as Best Sport Compact!

I would do the list differently than C&D did. I would just have the 10 most attractive/best cars for drivers for 2006. Kinda like they used to do!

   BWM 330i
   Lexus IS350
   Chrysler 300C
   Honda S2000
   Mini Cooper S
Ford Mustang GT (even doh it's mad ugly!)
   Mitsubishi Evo
   Chevy Corvette
   Honda Civic
   Mazda RX-8

I'd chose the practical and versatile Civic over the practical, but not so attractive Accord.

Since I can crush a Mustang GT, and carry 4 people comfortably (I've sat in the back seat, quite roomy for 6-footers) for less than $30k, the Evo stays until someone does it better.

S2000 is the best roadster/driving scalpel when value is considered. When you can buy another 10 Best car with the price difference, and really only lose the fancy tag (plus get a better looking ride), take it ove the pricey Boxster.

And from what I read, the 330 didn't beat the IS. The IS is the best Automatic Sports Sedan, and with a stick would've beaten the 3 rather easily. So both stay until this is settled!

Pound for Pound Best car Money Can Buy by rockylee
Dec 09, 2005 (6:43 pm)
I think the new Lexus IS 350 is the best car money can buy. It has a butt load of technology, is fast and fun to drive, is safe, and can haul a wife and 2 kids. I am a GM employees son, and a guy that has many relatives that work for GM/Delphi. I just wished their was a way to buy one, and not hurt my family's feelings for not buying a GM.

I am in love with the IS 350 and in my opinion, it's the best car made. Like Floyd Mayweather Jr. it's the best pound for pound (Value) ever made. I have never owned a Lexus. But damn this car is awesome and should be the car of the year for every auto mag. Shame on MT for picking the Civic.

However the Acura RL is the best "all-season" family car money can buy (My Opinion)

I feel ya, Rocky! by callmedrfill

I wanna love the IS! I REALLY REAALY WANNA LOVE IT!

But they sold me out, and pulled a Mercedes, putting the stick in the wrong model, cutting all enthusiast off at the knees!

It maybe the most fun Automatic sedan on Earth, but I, and I guess the editors at C&D cannot pardon the unpardonable.

The RL is great, on paper, but cars need a personality, especially at $50k, and this car drops that ball like Leon Lett!

"It maybe the most fun Automatic sedan on Earth"

Even my (now) 7 year old daughter who mastered the 1-2 and 2-1 shift in our S2000 from the passenger seat when she was 4 years old (with me working the clutch) knows that:

"Automatic" and "Fun" are mutually exclusive terms!

As for some other comments:

(1) Lexus IS250/350: I'd like to give Lexus the benefit of the doubt, but every single previous model I've driven has handled a lot more like an Oldsmobile or Buick than a BMW or Porsche. The GS430 was a disspointment, the SC430 is a joke. And if BMW can fit a proper 6-speed to their top of the line 550i, Lexus needs to slap its engineers into fitting one into any model they want to market against BMW. Period.

(2) Cadillac as the best sports car? Cadillac as the best anything? No, no, no, no, no.

(3) Acura TL 6-speed not a good "family" sedan because it has a 6-speed? Go back and read the beginning of this post. My 7 year old's biggest complaint with our 911 compared to our former S2000 is that the 911 has a back seat from which she can't reach the stick. My wife's ONLY complaint about her MDX is that it's an automatic. Had the X5 3.0 6-speed been a bit bigger, that's what she'd have. You don't need to drive like Mario Andretti to prefer a crisp short throw 6-speed manual to a sloppy slushbox. And you don't need to live in rural Kansas - we live in DC. And you don't need to be built like a truck driver - the combined weight of my wife, 10 year old daughter and 7 year old daughter is under 200 lbs.

Correction, my wife just informed me that she weighs 105, our 10 year old weighs 60 and our 7 year old weighs 48 for a total of 213.

But they all can drive a stick!!

Actually now you can get a C350 with a stick!

Sorry, Merc by callmedrfill

I was referring to the initial faux paus when the C-Class came out 5-6 years ago.

The bad first impression was already made.

My bad first impression of a Mercedes stick came when I test drove an SLK230 6-speed back in 2001. Compared to the precise, crisp shifting Honda S2000 and Porsche Boxster S, the Mercedes stick felt like it was made out of rubber bands.

As I have said before, I believe AMG engineers are exceptionally talented, but misguided. It's not as if the "55" engine at 493 hp is so weak as to need a "65" with 600+. But if AMG put a bit more time into developing a decent manual transmission, tighter suspension and cars that aren't 500 lbs overweight, they might create an SL, SLK, CLK or even a C-class model that actually appeals to real driving enthusiasts, instead of muscle car maniacs overdosing on Viagra.

M-B must've heard your complaints. The 2005 C230k I test drove last year had a really good shifter. Crisp, solid, short throws. I liked their tranny better than the others I drove (Infiniti & BMW).
