Well if you exclude the LC and LX570 which are ultra niche vehicles the only vehicle from Japan that has more volume this year over last is the Yaris. Every other one is down across both the Toyota line and the Lexus line.

For the Yaris it's not so much of a problem because the absolute loss due to currency valuations is small because the cost and the selling prices are small. 10% of a $10000 vehicle is somewhat acceptable on a limited basis. 10% on a $30000 vehicle starts to add up to big money....and then it's these very vehicles that are acting like anchors on the lots.

for xA sales, and that was the year I considered buying one. I still like the styling of the "old-school" xA. The car says "let's play" to me.

It always said to me, "I am the slowest selling Scion and I need to be replaced. But I least I am better than an echo." But for me it was way better looking than the old xB. And everything is better looking than the new xB. well maybe not a Honda Element.

The Honda Element has saved many a vehicle from being teh ugliest thing you can buy.

I still think the Axtek was the ugliest thing produced in recent memory but you can't buy one new anymore so the Element wins.

Yes the Element took over where the Aztek left off. Toyota is trying hard to dethrone them both. The new xB being a real good try.

I like boxes so the Element or the xB is fine with me. Old style xB or new. The Aztek's failing was that it wasn't square enough.

...the rumor about the RWD coup coming as the new tC seems to be...a bigger rumor now.

new tC from Subaru

Note also the reference to the iQ, which also has been rumored.

Oh geez, so they will BOTH be Scions??!! I could see that in the case of the iQ, but the tC replacement is the right size and price range to be in the Toyota line, and Toyota could soooo use a car like this.

I am not sure what I have against the Scion label, it's just dumb I guess, but I would much rather have a car with the Toyota mark on it than the Scion one.

Of course, Subaru will offer its own version of this car, so there's hope yet.....

Subaru's constant place in the bottom half of the dependability studies gives me pause whe thinking they will be providing engines for a new Toyota Celica. Toyota has slipped a bit in quality "perception" in many consumer's minds. Add the Subaru less than stellar quality ratings and we could see a problem brewing. I do not know of one former celica fan that ever wished it came with a Subaru powerplant.

Well this particular powertrain has been around in Japanese Subarus for a number of years, so it's well tested and sorted by now, certainly by 2010 when they will deploy it in this new model.

Would they wish for a powered-up version of Toyota's new Valvematic 2.0? Well, they can go on wishing, because the only reason Toyota even took this on was because it could be done cheaply. And given the really awful way sales and the economy have gone, we can be thankful to that fact as the only reason this project is still in the works.
