Can you just substitute any 4 regular tires of 225/55 R16 size to replace the RFTs, or do they have to be special types to replace them?

I am picking up my new 328xi in a couple of weeks. My dealer is offering road hazard insurance - will repair or replace tires and wheels due to damage from road hazard. 60 months for $795.00. Any opinions on this.

Replying to: stephend (Jul 12, 2008 3:43 am) the tires may be 150 at tire rack-plus another 50 to mount esp as they are run flat. The wheels are costly. This is especially important if you drive in an eastern city where potholes and rough railroad tracks are abundant. I have the 335 with sport package so my tires are even lower profile and the wheels a bit more costly. I have 1500 miles on car and already have hit small potholes that felt like craters. My vette with RFT--already changed tires two times for damage--paid for more than half of the insurance before wheel damage. |

i'm a skeptic. When you blow a tire the manufacturer usually gives a road hazard warrantee. But when they start depreciating the tire they usually don't pay much. But the insurance from the dealer doesn't make much sense to me because you would have to blow more than four tires to break even. My opinion for whatever its worth is take the $800, clams and put it in the bank, draw a little interest and if you need a tire, draw down the cost.

| Run flats have side walls that hold the weight of the car when the air is gone as well as keeping the tire on the rim. The small potholes that I used to hit caused the fillings in my teeth to fall out. Thats why I dumped mine. They are sitting in my garage waiting for the next dump run. 22000 miles on them and I should have change them as soon as I realized how hard the tires were. | |

If I had purchased tire insurance on all my previous cars, that would have been thousands of dollars of wasted money. The tire insurance is a profit center, not a public service and they hard sell it for a reason. |

Can anyone comment on whether a lease price of $829 per month for a 36 month lease at 18,000 miles a year with nothing down( everything rolled into payment including taxes) is a fair price on a $51,450 MRSP vehicle?
