I have major problem with my tires, this is the second set of tires I purchased, a total 8 tires $2500. just brought another one today, 328.00 from Tire Rack. I keep getting side wall damage , Bridgestone Potenza runflat tires are horrible. I also declined the tire insurance, which I now regret, I drive safely avoid potholes and it doesn't matter, still get side wall (bubble) damage, does anyone know if I can replace these RFT with regular tires, the car does not have a spare. There is a sensor that tell you when the tire pressure is low, will this work if I remove the RFT, any help is appreciated.. thanks |

Second--each mfg RFT handles differently, rides differently etc. ie--I found the Firestones to be better than OE Goodyears on ride, handling and quiet. Finally--I have driven cross country several times--got a sidewall bubble from a pothole on the interstate in New Mexico, it happens. and I got a flat late nite in Joplin Mo--what happened as I finished an all day run i added air as I was headed north te next day and expected cooler temps-in doing so--on on etire the air hose locked to the vale and broke the valve--the FRT allowed my to drive the 5 miles to the hotel and a local goodyear dealer put in a regular valve so I could continue the trip. That was probably 7-8 years ago so now more dealers have the equipment and knowledge to work with RFT's. But all you need is to be caught 1 time without a spare or not have the right air and sealent and you are in a heap of trouble! |

| Can you just substitute any 4 regular tires of 225/55 R16 size to replace the RFTs, or do they have to be special types to replace them? | |

put on what your wallet likes but make sure its speed rated. ya know check em out. do your home work. i just put a set of cooper 2xr (or some thing like that) on my boxster. they ride great, stick great but if i get 2 years on them i will be happy. so do whatcha ya gotta. ciao for now |

I am picking up my new 328xi in a couple of weeks. My dealer is offering road hazard insurance - will repair or replace tires and wheels due to damage from road hazard. 60 months for $795.00. Any opinions on this.

Replying to: stephend (Jul 12, 2008 4:43 am) the tires may be 150 at tire rack-plus another 50 to mount esp as they are run flat. The wheels are costly. This is especially important if you drive in an eastern city where potholes and rough railroad tracks are abundant. I have the 335 with sport package so my tires are even lower profile and the wheels a bit more costly. I have 1500 miles on car and already have hit small potholes that felt like craters. My vette with RFT--already changed tires two times for damage--paid for more than half of the insurance before wheel damage. |

i'm a skeptic. When you blow a tire the manufacturer usually gives a road hazard warrantee. But when they start depreciating the tire they usually don't pay much. But the insurance from the dealer doesn't make much sense to me because you would have to blow more than four tires to break even. My opinion for whatever its worth is take the $800, clams and put it in the bank, draw a little interest and if you need a tire, draw down the cost.

| Run flats have side walls that hold the weight of the car when the air is gone as well as keeping the tire on the rim. The small potholes that I used to hit caused the fillings in my teeth to fall out. Thats why I dumped mine. They are sitting in my garage waiting for the next dump run. 22000 miles on them and I should have change them as soon as I realized how hard the tires were. | |
