MidCow,
I'm surprised to hear that your accord is faster than an 06 si. I'm not saying that it isn't, I just don't know. How much horse is that 6 cylinder putting out and what do you think your 0-60 is?

Accord puts out 240HP. It has tested 0-60 runs in 5.9-6.2 seconds. Best I have seen yet for the Si is 6.7. Additionally, the Accord has more torque and HP at lower RPM which means it's easier to duplicate the times vs. the higher-revving Si.

The times of 5.9-6.2 0-60 for the Accord are accurate for one with a manual transmission. An automatic would be a bit slower, though still no slouch. The Si would have the edge in the handling department.

According to a recent Consumer Reports review, VW's have one of the worst repair records of any car today. Even the VW CEO admits they have some reliability "issues" they are working on. I know people who had their brand new door not able to close and latch, or their window crank come off in their hand. Strumelia

Chuck writes:
I did mostly highway driving, and the highways were slower moving ones for the most part. I went 71 mph with the cruise control on, and on the slower highways I only went 64 mph. I shift around 3500 to each gear. I know these are slow speeds but I wanted to see how good the car would do.

Chuck, You call 71mph "slow"? What's the speed limit where you live? In any case, you can't expect to drive faster and faster and get better mileage that way. Pick one or the other- high speed or good mileage. I think you are really lucky to get the mileage you do! Guess it's because you don't do a lot of city driving or stop and go driving. Strumelia

Additional note of VW. The customer service interface of the Service departments also has a pretty low rating. Which means besides poor relaibilitiy thate service departmnet managers and technicians also treat you poorly.

I almost bought a Golf TDI. Luckily the salesman raised his offer from invoice to $300 over and I walked. Then I read the VW horror stories. 2003 was a very fine year!

The one major thing I love about VW beetles though is this: they sure know how to pick happening exterior colors. No "grandpa grey"'s or "sort of silver"'s in THAT bunch! (sigh...)

Here in Michigan the speed limit is 70 on most of the highways, so people truly go 75+mph. My commute to work is 63 miles, some of the highways are 70 mph, some are only 55mph so in the 70 mph section I go 71, and in the 55 section, I go 64. It's very hard to only go 71 when everone one is racing up to my rear bumper....I'm lucky to commute during off peak hours...
Anyways...I am happy to get the milage that I do!

XM radio by chuckd2

I really want this but it's to much from the dealer (around 700, installed)
My SI's radio is xm ready but I don't know what that really means as far as accessable connections for the box and if the antenna wire is already ran...
Does anybody know how hard it would be to get a universal xm black box and do the install?

Midcow,

The 2006 WRX has a 2.5 liter engine (not a 2.2) and it has almost no turbo lag. It is a substantially better performer than the Accord in all performance measures.

To be fair, they are definitely aimed at different markets. The WRX is a functional sports sedan, the Accord v6 is a very nice, reliable, sedan/coupe. The accord can accelerate quickly, but it's brakes and handling are not built for sporty intentions.

The TC is a tremendous value. If you are someone who is going to modify your car, and you want the best performance on the block, the TC isn't for you. It's a very inexpensive (for the content) economy car with a strong, reliable engine and alot of features stock. The supercharger is great and all, but it pushes the car up into a whole new category of cars based upon cost. If cost is a factor, and you enjoy a fun to drive car, this is a good choice.

The WRX is a great choice as well, but figure out if you really need AWD, and if you want 4 doors. It will get about 23-26mpg on average and uses premium, and for this you get outstanding acceleration and a very solid midrange (the wrx is not a top end performer...it's good till about 6000 rpms, and then begins to die off. This is, in large part, due to 3 catalytic converters in the exhaust).

It will also respond to modifications much better than any other car on the list. With a $600 investment, you will be close to STI territory on a stock WRX. (Cobb Accessport).

For the record, I drive a 2005 Saab 9-2x Aero which is a WRX Wagon. I am trading it in for an SI, as I don't need AWD, and wanted alot of things the SI offers.

Good Luck in your choice!

Joe
