Check out our spy shots of the Volkswagen Marrakesh, a compact SUV built on the fifth-gen Golf platform.

Looks like an oddly proportioned Golf with more ground clearence, oh wait-it is. Seems it may be a bit overpriced, and I think at this point VW was better off trying to concentrate on building economic, practical cars- if buyers have enough sense, they'll become more popular as gas prices climb. But at least it's not a gas guzzler- and it doesn't look too bad. The expected name of the model reminds me of a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song....

sounds interesting. Could catch all those Touareg buyers scared by the MPG numbers.

I'm a bit puzzled about this SUV. I know Volkswagen has been planning to release a smaller SUV, but they had rumours that it would go under the name "Crossgolf" or "Crossfox". Then they said it would be called the Beduin or something. Now Marrakesh. Not really sure which one it will really be......

Interesting how both VW SUVs have names related to North Africa. Touareg is a Saharan tribe and Marrakesh is a Morrocan city.

What's in a Name? by chazzoh

I think "Marrakesh" is a terrible name. In fact, I wonder if it is so bad that American buyers will avoid the vehicle for that reason alone. Just my opinion, of course.

Also, would anyone care to list a vehicle or two that (in your opinion) flopped because of its name? I can't think of any off-hand.

With regards to names, the Mark LT is a pretty lousy name. Many predict that the truck will flop, but that's because of it is just a fancy F-150.

About this new SUV, I would like it better of VW went with the name Crossgolf. It sounds better.

I don't think a lot of cars have flopped only due to its name. Normally its a combination of factors.

The Aztek was a total disaster, and it didn't sell because of the looks mostly. People thought the thing was hideous!

Diesel version? by vwinva

Edmunds reports the Marrakesh will be built on the new Golf platform. This suggests a TDI version might be available. Anyone heard anything on this?

I'd like to have one. Fuel economy in a Jetta TDI is nice but I tired of looking at other people's tail pipes.
