Wheres the third row?!
Everyone knows Freestyle is a flop and will need to be replaced in a year or two.
Answers I've heared: Fairlane. Sounds nice but should be pretty big. Also I heared they might stuff a third row into the edge. I wonder if there's a way they can do this w/o stuffing? Rendezvous: inch longer--nice 3rd row
The Fairlane concept shown at the auto show was based on Edge (CD3) platform. It was deemed too small to be a "people mover", so the production version (just officially approved several days ago) will be on 500/Freestyle platform(D3).
So, yes, Edge can have a 3rd row seat, a nice one at that, in crossover term. Will it see production? Who knows. IMHO Freestyle, people mover and 3-row Edge cannot co-exist. One must go (or not born). Could Freestyle be gone? Yes, could be, but not very soon. Ford already has a MY 08 major refreshing coming out next spring, so it's unlikely to be dropped before 2010.

Albook - did you forget the revised Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego styling and the same new engine engine and transmission which is in the Edge and MKX? The Edge and MKX will be at dealerships in November of 2006, while the revised 2008 model year Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego will be at dealerships in early 2007. Ford will then offer the following crossover vehicles:
Escape/Mariner/Tribute - two rows
CX-7 - two rows
Edge / MKX - two rows
Freestyle - three rows
CX-9 - three rows
The Fairlane will come later to be the largest.

The Fairlane will have much more room. It's a lower floor, a higher ceiling creation. The Lincoln version will be a bit different, as in swoopier in profile (more MB R-Class)

When does the Freestyle get 3.5L engine & 6-speed transmission?

I sell Fords and Subaru's and with the Edge Subaru better look out!! It will be more powerful, roomier and have more features than the B9 Tribecca. Personally I cant wait till the Edge hits our showroom. It will be a complement to the Freestyle (which will get the more powerful 3.5lt engine shortly, and get rid of the CVT trans.).
So I will have both a 7 passenger mover and a 5 passenger mover that will get better gas mileage with AWD than Subaru can offer and if 6sigma continues their fine work we will have another winner just like the Fusion, and Ford will finally get the Freestyle the power it should of had. As well as one of the most powerful and fuel efficient V-6's on the market.

It is interesting how the Mazda alliance is saving Ford's hide. Nothing else seems to work for them. PAG is in the dumps. Trucks are in a free fall. Fusion and most likely Edge are their only successful models and both are based on the Mazda platform.
I really like Mazda's design sensibilities and Fords based on the turn out pretty nicely too. Going way back Mercury Tracer and Ford Probe were some of Ford's nicest cars and both were Mazda based. Mercury Tracer which was built in the same plant as the Fusion was probably the best built Ford product ever. They routine go 300000-400000 thousand miles.
