Good point on the residuals. Should I wait until the 09s come out or do you think they might change the money factor in July to move more cars?

Thanks

Why would someone lease a luxury vehicle? by joeslacker

It's funny to see people talking about leasing here.
Paying $600+/month for 24 months plus down payment, you are paying about $20k for 2 years!!
Why not just buy it? It may cost $50k but it makes much more sense if you keep it for a few years longer, it worths the bucks to buy it.

Plus, why would people buy a mercedes or bmw if they cannot afford it? i've seen people in my company probably make only around $60k a year but he drives a $40k bmw. And he thinks he can afford it because his paycheck has enough to cover the monthly lease. Well, it seems a lot of people are doing the same, but I just don't get it.

I have both owned and leased over the years and the answer, at least for me is very simple. With just about any car, but especially with so called luxury vehicles once they reach about 60k - 70k on the odometer things start going south and the repairs on a luxury vehicle that is out of warranty are crazy.

For example I own a 2001 Audi A6 that I purchased certified pre-owned when it came off of a lease (not mine) and after the extended warranty ran out I have been avg about $3k a year in repairs, mostly normal wear and tear (brakes, tires, etc.) plus a couple of other annoying items. Take that plus the $90 oil changes several times a year and it adds up, and is quite annoying as well.

In my opinion it is just plain easier to lease and re-up for a newer model in 2-3 years. You keep a reasonable monthly payment, take advantage of the latest & greatest gadgets, advancements, etc., and you don't have to worry about the somewhat unexpected cost and inconvenience of repairs when things wear out or just plain break - which will happen with every car. Additionally you get better service/attention from the dealer beause they know when your lease runs out that you are going to be in the market again.

I do not disagree with your point of making monthly lease payments with no ownership, but from my perspective you are also paying for the added convenience and piece of mind that you don't have to worry about being in the repair shop when things start to wear down, which they will over time.

With regards to cost, affording a luxury vehicle is not an issue for me, but I am sure everyone would agree that no one wants to be paying more money for a similar vehicle then the next guy. That is why these forums are so popular so it can give the average joe some leverage when dealing with a vendor that histroically has stuck it to the uninformed buyer.

They are-just traded my 2006 r 350 for a 2008 r 350
my lease was scheduled to run out in Oct and the dealership called about a 3 month loyalty on the E class and then stated it was also valid on the r class--a good deal all in all-will have to pay overage in miles-did not want to roll them into a new lease

Just picked up an 08 R350 4matic (MSRP of $56210) for $659 p/month for 33 months including NJ sales tax (7%) with no money at out pocket and the first payment paid by the dealer (Not a penny due at inception!!). I think I did ok?

Thoughts?

Hello all -

First, thank you for all of your contributions to this forum. I have gained tons of knowledge here.....just enough to be dangerous, I guess.

After a few months of researching, I finally decided the time was right to get into an r350. Especially since the dealer stocks of 08 models are getting thin in some colors. Also, some of the deals people have been posting for purchases and leases have been great.

I am looking at an R350 4matic with P2, ipod, 7 seat, 6cd and heated seats with an MSRP of about 56.5K. I am interested in leasing primarily.

My local dealer proposed the following lease:

33 months/15K miles
$53988 gross cap cost (TTL, 3% Virginia tax)
0.00110 money factor
53% residual
First month payment on delivery
$829 / month

This is a far cry from the deals elsewhere on the forum....what am I missing and where am I getting screwed?? What can I reasonably demand in the current market??

I had anticipated a target cap cost (car only) of about MSRP-10K and having the lease calculated using the MB financial numbers of (24 Month – Residual 58% of MSRP – .00075 Base Rate)

Thank you very much for any and all help.

Don
