The point remains; historically, GM has continually improved their models in incremental steps as the model gets further into it's life cycle

According to Consumer Reports just about every mfg improves with time...even Honda doesnt look so great when you compare first year vs. third year....so what's the big deal about GM doing the samething everyone else does?? If they didn't get it right after a few years they would have been long gone instead of on life support. GM has a long shakey road ahead and GM buyers should take that into consideration.

Initial GM quality has been improving steadily over the past few years. Just look at the Buick division. Only time will tell. It is more important to look at longevity as opposed to initial quality. Just my $0.02.

Generally speaking, the things that Honda/Toyota/Mazda et al improve from year to year are more along the lines of fit/finish items. The drivetrain remains essentially untouched through the length of the model run.

Case in point: the 2nd generation Miata (introduced as a '99 model?) arrived with a 1.8l four making 140hp and a curb weight of about 2300 lbs. The last year of the 2nd generation it was the same 1.8l four making 142hp with a curb weight up to about 2450 lbs.

The domestics are infamous (GM particularly) for continually tweeking the performance levels of their sporty cars in an attempt to keep the car 'fresh' and attacting new buyers. I'm actually surprised they will be releasing the GXP version as early as they are planning. Typically, they wait for the bloom to be off of a model before they start releasing higher performance editions to increase the buzz again.

Does GM as a company have a long shakey road ahead? I don't doubt that at all; but if they can continue to develop cars as good as the Solstice (which is NOT without it's own issues) the road will be somewhat easier.

For my part, I will wait until next year when a depreciated Solstice will be available everywhere for $10,000.....or is that the Fiero I'm thinking about?........sometimes I get confused with all the GM greats like the Vega and Fiero and ..............

I'm not sure that talking about V-8 upgrades belongs on these pages

Makes as much sense as saying a modified Miata can beat a stock Solstice.

It is only a matter of time before an aftermarket turbo or supercharger is available for the 2006 MX5 and the gauntlet will be dropped once again only to be won by the Miata.

GM beat Mazda to market by announcing it will have the Turbo GXP available this Summer. There are already some good aftermarket components for the Kappa frame and the 2.4 ecotec.

Tuning is a labor of love. The Solstice and Sky will have a lot more love going for them than the blah MX-5. You will have to start hiding from a lot of tuned Kappa cars soon.

Tried to Compare... by cargeek1

I went to the Pontiac Dlr where they actually had a Solstice available, I tried to drive it but they said no dice, they actually wanted me to buy the car without driving it. I can understand that they don't want everyone in town driving the car since they are so few available but It was obvious I was serious, I had my trade all cleaned up, even showed them that I had the title for my trade and I was serious but I had to drive the car, still no deal, Later the same day I returned to the dealer in my new MX-5. I stopped and went in to ask the salesman and the sales manager if they wanted to see my new car! They were pretty pissed and told me I had to leave the dealership, which I did laughing all the way. I love the MX-5, I have no idea if it drives better than the Pontiac or not since I couldn't even get a test drive in the Solstice. I hope all you Solstice guys enjoy your car as much as I enjoy my MX-5. And if I ever run into any of you I'm really anxious to ask about that truck tranny you guys got in that Solstice!

My parents sent me off to college in a new Mazda 323 back in 1986, and I drove the wheels off that car. When I finally got rid of it at 265,000 miles the AC was still cold and everything worked. The only thing I ever did to that car was put in a few clutches, brakes and replaced an alternator. Hopefully this Mazda will bring me the same kind of experience.

I fault the dealer for losing that sale to you....we bought the Sol sight unseen...but did get to sit and ride in one.....as well as drive and compare to the MX-5....we were happier with the Sol..for interior space...and comfort......its obvious you are happy with the MX-5 as we are with our Sol......

perhaps the dealership learned a lesson in salesmanship.....what I really hate is the dealers...placing the market prem on the car..and snubbing it in customers faces......again.customer loyalty....not immediate sales gratification.....an educated informed customer...is a smart one..but there is always someone with deep pockets...with that I just got have the new toy attitude..who will pay the premium...personally I hope all the pontiac dealers get stuck with their Sols...that are charging the high prem prices...and I highly doubt you will see a depreciated Sol at 10K anytime soon with the demand for this car......

as for getting trounced by another miata...come on over..I'll gladly let you beat me off the line..race down the road....Im not into that..I enjoy the car..for the simple top down driving experience.....so to both miata and sol owners....enjoy your cars!

I've been ragging on the Solstice and GM pretty hard so far so maybe it's time to let up a little. It's about time that GM got out of the "build a bigger SUV" routine and started addressing the needs and desires of the market. Every article I have read recently points to the demise of GM by 2010 with Toyota finally surpassing market share at that time. It is going to be a sad day for America when the Asian economy is in control of the world and we are hat in hand. So, if the Solstice and Sky and similar American cars can finally provide the quality that has been sorely lacking in American production cars than I say it's a good thing for all of us. I hope everyone enjoys their respective cars. My last true sports car before buying the Miata was a Porsche 911 cabriolet. I owned that car for 10 years and enjoyed it immensely. Believe it or not, I am now enjoying this supercharged Miata even more than the Porsche since I am no longer faced with extremely high maintenance and down time that I had to endure with the Porsche. I hope the Solstice stays out of the shop long enough for all of you to enjoy it.

Big deal...anyone who know anything about the Miata's tremendous success knows it isnt about big horsepower and going faster than other cars. It's about a true pure roadster....nothing more. It's only a matter of time before GM tries to make the SOL a cheater corvette with big hp, all kinds of electronics, big price increases and fluff that true roadster buyers don't want.

This is essentially the mistake every Miata competitor has made...the don't understand the basics of a great roadster and why the Miata is the best selling roadster in history.

Way to jump into the middle of a debate and take my stuff out of context.

My post was in response to MX5rules who owns a 1999 Mazda Miata tuned it, and is making a big deal about the speed advantage he allegedly has over a stock Solstice/Sky.

The MX5 is pretty packed with gizmos by the way, as was the NB Miata. Something I learned when my computer kept breaking down on me.

Your are also ignoring the MazdaSpeed Miata.

GM has said repeatedly it is committed to keeping the base Solstice pure. There is no reason to think it will not.

By the way, what Miata competitors? You had the Mr2 which was, in fact, a fairly simple car. The S2000 competes with the higher echelons. The BMW and Porsche (which is a big sales success) roadster are certainly not Mazda competitors either.
