There really is not much left to discuss. For the money the Red Line Sky is a better car, quicker, faster and most certainly better looking. In addition, it not a "chicks" car like the Miata. My money is on the Sky (Solstice). The Miata-philes just can't stand that there's some real competition on the horizon and it says GM on the back. Ford ought to be ashamed that they let the Miata get "fat", bigger (i.e. heavier) and certainly not much faster than the original on a price-adjusted basis. Shame on you Ford. The next time I am in the market, my money is on the Sky Red Line or Solstice. The next time you're at a light in your "chicks" car and a Red Line Sky pulls up next to you, be afraid, very afraid of what it will do to your ego. As to all the speculation that the next GEN Miata will have 250 + HP, I'll believe it when I see it and even if I do, you can bet that the Ford, I mean Mazda, dealers will be asking more than list for it. Stand in line and wait to be fleeced I say. GM hit a home run and the opposing Team can't stand it. |

The current MX-5 is only 20 lbs heavier and has been totally redesigned, but, it still weighs 400lbs lighter then the Sol. and Sky. Also has 30 more horses over the previous gen, and is much faster. Ford did not have much say, if any, in what Mazda did to the MX-5. As to all the speculation that the next GEN Miata will have 250 + HP, I'll believe it when I see it and even if I do, you can bet that the Ford, I mean Mazda, dealers will be asking more than list for it. It will most likely be a Mazdaspeed MX-5, not the next generation. Mazdaspeed would be comparable to Redline or GXP. As for Mazda dealers asking ADM's. What do you think GM dealers HAVE been doing, and are STILL doing on the regular production Sky's and Sol's? Placing ADM's! They are most certainly NOT getting it anymore, but, that does not stop them from trying. I will agree that the added performance of a Sky Redline and Solstice GXP is quite good. Mazda does not currently offer anything to compete with that in the MX-5 trim. So, yes, GM has an advantage there. Where GM does not have the advantage is quality, reliability, and a proven vehicle. While it may be concieveable GM did hit the perverbial "home run", they only did it in a low production vehicle that does not apply to the masses. Time will tell if this was the "game winning hit" that GM was looking for, and so desperately needed, or if this was rather "solo home run" that will be short lived. Us MX-5 fans are not worried. Have nothing to be worried about. While the Redline and GXP offer more power and performance. The regular production Solstice and Sky does not.

One, the easy operation of the top. I couldn't believe how cumbersome GM made the top operation. Two, storage space. My wife and I love to take weekend road trips and if I had to leave my convertible in the garage because I couldn't fit any luggage, I would go nuts. The price and reliability of the MX-5 were a bonus. To each his own but for me the choice was easy. |

To argue that no one bought them for racing and ONLY used them as roadsters is ridiculous. Here in the midwest they run around all the time with their tops down and their aftermarket roll bars and Enkei or BBS wheels and modified pipes. The stock class that they run allows these mods and no more. They do quite well in their class (did until the S 2000 came along) and were quite good for a stock car. Problem is, the new one went the wrong direction and indeed got heavier and on a price adjusted basis became MUCH more expensive than they were. I'd be real impressed had FORD said, "Lets go in the direction of the Elise or Exige and cut the fat." Then I 'd say the MX5 would be worth a look. Till then, its turned in to a cute, quiet and comfortable "chicks car" which it didnt have to be. Give us 200 HP, drop 300 lbs and then lets go racing, thats what they should have done. Then I'd be impressed.

| Let's tone down the rhetoric, folks -- we're supposed to be talking about cars, not each other. | |

Problem is, the new one went the wrong direction and indeed got heavier I don't really call 20 lbs that much weight. I have another reference for you. The Honda Civic. They are tuned and raced everywhere, and yet, they are marketed at a fuel efficient economy car to the masses. The MX-5 is marketed to the masses as a true roadster, and if you wish, you can modify the crap out of it and race it. Most MX-5 owners will not. If you think about it, you can basically modify any car now a days....

This morning I read the Edmunds test on the PRHT and guess what, the primary thing they noticed was the increase in weight (and price too). So, if we take your 20 LBS and add the other "70" for the PRHT mechanisms, then we're looking at almost a 100 lbs (90 to be exact). Again, the car has gotten better to drive daily (quieter etc) but has gotten heavier by 100 lbs, more expensive by 1000s of dollars (the PRHT is at $30 K guys). For that money you can get the MUCH quicker SKY Red Line or the MUCH MUCH better and much faster S 2000. Attack the issue, not the person. Take a look at the ad to your left when you reply. Now thats a great looking car (Solstice). Once again, the Mazda should have gone in the Lotus direction of less weight, less complexity and less price. If its a true roadster as you say, then its gotten away from its roots as a tossable, easy to fix, reliable daily driver that you can race too. Try racing the PRHT?? The FLEX at the first pointer cone will change your mind real quick. |
