Both purchases were after a lot of research, test drives and analysis. I think I wore out a couple of Edmunds forums in the process. Both of my final decisions were based on "substance", not image. In fairness, aesthetics and ergonomics factored into my decisions, but my evaluation of these factors was based solely upon my personal preferences, not what I thought others might think. As to your "no contest" image contest between the Miata and the Solstice, I would respectfully suggest that image is not necessarily the friend of Pontiac. Many people I know would find GM's reputation for inferior build quality a huge stumbling block. That's both a substance and image problem that the Solstice may be incapable of overcoming. If the Solstice really intends to fight for market share based upon "image", they need to be aware that they are fighting with a double edged sword.

| The Fiero w/ the aftermarket Ferrari body (called Mira I guess) can give you, well, at least a Magnum P.I.-ish image. | |

Finally, if you knew how much care and detail the Japanese put into the development of a new vehicle, you would be amazed! The Solstice may look better and have similar performance numbers, but I have driven BOTH cars and the Miata feels more like an extension of the driver than the Solstice. Have you driven both vehicles?

I think another problem for the pontiac is that it only has one exhaust pipe. From a style standpoint it does not look as sporty as dual exhaust does. The should fix this one ASAP. Still, the Pontiac does have a few advantages. The Ecotec 2.4 is a better motor with more low end power than the Mazda, and the interrior (although maybe a little bit harder) is cleaner than the Mazda. The styling is better too, although i think the Saturn sky is even better. That car better have at least HID's or something. Also dont forget the pontiac does beat out the mazda in price at just about every trim level. |

Replying to: govnah (Oct 17, 2005 3:26 pm) - yes on the warranty....Solstice yet to be proven for reliability - side airbags...both are small cars...which will greatly increase injury in an accident side bags help....but in a major collision....ugh - roll bar.....the odds of rolling the car are minimum if you drive normally - Trunk....yes on Miata.....but useable space on the solstice with some innovation - LSD is an option on the Solstice..dont care for Xenon - lower the top...the new MX-5 has a one latch release..but I couldnt get the top to loock in place reaching around...I had to get out of the car to do it while pushing down on the top..even the salesman couldnt do it from inside the car....same for the solstice - keyless entry/start..dont need for a manual shift - proven history..no doubt - get now...yes....are they moving no....sitting on the dealers lots here in No Va - wait for the solstice...yes....permium..only if you dont do you search and find a dealer to get it at MSRP... as far as engineering...the solstice is probably one of the most engineered cars by GM in many years with the Kappa body and other efforts that went into this car from concept to production in two plus years...but only time will tell.. having driven both...Im not the performance car nut..I admit..but felt more comfortable, more hip and shoulder room in the solstice...leg room comparable to in both...Solstice styling wins....overall I think its a personal choice |
