"People who is waiting for the coupe MX-5, why don't they just buy a RX-8. That car handles well and can be bought cheap with huge incentives all the time. Personally, I like the look of the RX8 over the MX-5."

I almost bought one, but I ended up w/ a Focus ST for more drifting opportunities (during trail throttle).

Where's the low-rpm thrust from the rotary? I want to power drift the rear end w/ LSD at low speed way way before you reach the cornering limit at speeds way too dangerous off track.

So low-end torque rules & saves gas, too!

This must be the thread for despondent Miata fans to vent about getting blown out of the water by the Solstice.

Yes you know the facts, show up with the Mazda and nobody cares.

It must suck to be yesterday's news so you need to use the opinion of a (cough cough) unbiased (snicker snicker) Edmunds (bent over laughing) expert.

The fact is the Solstice if not so very close to being the Miata's equal blows it so far away with looks and does it right out of the box, you stubborn Mazda flunkies are scared to death.

It's gonna get worse for you.

And no Edmund's "expert" will save you.

Here's the part that really sucks, styling and image matter in this class. The Solstice has such a huge advantage in this category, Mazda just packed up their bags without even trying. Can the regular Joe tell the difference between old and new Mazda or even care? On other hand the Solstice radiates cool. So what if there's no trunk, it's a four wheel Harley. If you worry about groceries in this car, why buy anything in the class.

Image trumps everything here boys, Pontiac wins. By a huge margin.

My, how times have changed. I remember when women used to be criticised for buying a car based solely on their looks. Now it's perfectly acceptable for anyone to admit that right up front. I have no doubt the Solstice will sell very well, and it probably should, but if you buy a car solely on looks and think others admire you for it, you might be in for a rude awakening. I'm thinking there are still a fair number of buyers out there who are willing to give up some of the spotlight to win at the stoplight, and track, and bank when it comes time to trade it in. My guess is that Miata buyers are going to be using their cars as daily transportation and that Solstice owners will make this a second or third car that only goes out on weekends. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anybody that buys either a Solstice or a Miata as a track car or for racing at lights is the one that missed the boat.

Both will have serious troubles running with a Cobalt SS or WRX.

Yes they are both about image and The Solstice cleans the clocks of the Miata, it is simply no contest

I must be the exception to your rule. In 2001, I bought a Honda S2000 and last month I bought a 911 Cab S. Both purchases were after a lot of research, test drives and analysis. I think I wore out a couple of Edmunds forums in the process. Both of my final decisions were based on "substance", not image. In fairness, aesthetics and ergonomics factored into my decisions, but my evaluation of these factors was based solely upon my personal preferences, not what I thought others might think.

As to your "no contest" image contest between the Miata and the Solstice, I would respectfully suggest that image is not necessarily the friend of Pontiac. Many people I know would find GM's reputation for inferior build quality a huge stumbling block. That's both a substance and image problem that the Solstice may be incapable of overcoming. If the Solstice really intends to fight for market share based upon "image", they need to be aware that they are fighting with a double edged sword.

The Fiero w/ the aftermarket Ferrari body (called Mira I guess) can give you, well, at least a Magnum P.I.-ish image.

To ibthedawg:

I too must be crazy because I actually have done quite a bit of research on the Solstice-vs-Miata, and for me the MIATA wins because of:
- Longer warranty (4/50,000 -vs- 3/36,000)
- Comes with side airbags (N/A on Solstice)
- Miata has safety roll over hoops (N/A on Solstice)
- Has a larger trunk that we WOULD use for trips
- Has traction control, LSD, and Xenon headlamps available (N/A on Solstice)
- You can raise and lower the top from the driver's seat with ONE HAND
- You can get keyless entry/ start with the Miata (N/A on Solstice)
- The Miata has a PROVEN HISTORY of realiability and quality
- I can easily get a Miata and not have to wait 6 to 10 months or pay a price premium

Yes, I would use the vehicle as a daily driver. Finally, if you knew how much care and detail the Japanese put into the development of a new vehicle, you would be amazed! The Solstice may look better and have similar performance numbers, but I have driven BOTH cars and the Miata feels more like an extension of the driver than the Solstice.

Have you driven both vehicles?

I agree with you that the sostice is missing the xenon lights and the rag top bieng manually operated is a HUGE disadvantage for pontiac.

Remember that GM has a $1500 disadvantage per car because of healthcare and medical bills. Thank the UAW for that, unfortunatley.

I think another problem for the pontiac is that it only has one exhaust pipe. From a style standpoint it does not look as sporty as dual exhaust does. The should fix this one ASAP.

Still, the Pontiac does have a few advantages. The Ecotec 2.4 is a better motor with more low end power than the Mazda, and the interrior (although maybe a little bit harder) is cleaner than the Mazda.

The styling is better too, although i think the Saturn sky is even better. That car better have at least HID's or something.

Also dont forget the pontiac does beat out the mazda in price at just about every trim level.
