different markets by carlisimo

I think many of the Solstice buyers are just people who want a cool GM "revival" car. They'd have bought the Solstice whether it was a convertible or not. Those buyers won't cut into MX-5 sales, but Mazda doesn't have a chance at them either.

Then there's people buying on style. Some of those (not the manly men among them) could be counted as lost MX-5 sales. So can drivers who want an open top. Or autocrossers (who tend to be more obsessed with grip than feel, as far as sporty drivers go).

I think he better look at what "demographic" means.

Dear whipper snapper,

A demographic or demographic profile is a term used in marketing and broadcasting, to describe a demographic grouping or a market segment. This typically involves age bands (as teenagers do not wish to purchase denture fixant), social class bands (as the rich may want different products than middle and poorer classes and may be willing to pay more) and gender (partially because different physical attributes require different hygiene and clothing products, and partially because of the man/woman mindsets).

Mazda North American Operations - March 2006

                           Month-To-Date Year-To-Date

March March % March March %
                      2006 2005 Change 2006 2005 Change

  Mazda3 8,087 9,455 (14)% 21,732 21,728 0%

  Mazda5 1,703 -- N/A 5,061 -- N/A

  Mazda6 7,215 6,791 6% 19,215 18,248 5%

  MX-5 Miata 2,000 680 194% 4,362 1,769 147%

  RX-8 1,582 2,489 (36)% 2,917 4,917 (41)%

ref logic1:
Solstice Sales
1/06 1990
2/06 1859
3/06 2219
4/06 1828

So for the month of March GM sold 219 more Solstices than Mazda
did MX-5s.

The Solstice and MX-5 have basically the same buyer. They are targeting the same person. They have basically that same demographics. You claimed that the Solstice is creating a new demographic. The car did not "create" anything, it is just an alternative product to an already existing demographic.

No need for name calling here.

No Name calling, BUT it appears to me that the Miata people are threatened by the Sky and Solstice. More power yes, handling as good or better, YES! Price competitive, for sure. Forget the pure sales numbers, there is an alternative to the same demographic and they are feeling threatened. Quit your crying, there's a new sheriff in town and it has a badge wearing GM on it. Just as the new Camaro will take some numbers from Ford (Mustang), the Sky and Solstice will surely wean away some prospective Miata buyers.

I was not refering to you.

Yes, 7 more HP. Faster, not according to the site you are posting on!! The Sol is 350 lbs heavier! As for handling " Pontiac Solstice has bold, aggressive styling with good handling, and a decent ride, but its weight hinders its agility, especially relative to the Miata" from most recent CR issue comparo "Cheap Thrills" article.

As for price, yes they are similar, but, not while Pontiac dealers are charging THOUSANDS in ADM's. Once that stops, they will be very close.

No crying here either. No need to feel threatened either. Many have tried, all have failed to take Miata's crown.

hope you don't do marketing for a living. A lot of cars appear to have the same properties and appeal to different buyers.

Haha...now that was funny. Too bad the sheriff is so broke he needed to sell the tin star for cash.

Yes, they do, however, the manufacturer sets what demographic they are targeting. GM and Mazda have the same customer targeted for the Solstice and MX-5. If someone outside their "set demographic" purchases their car, it's no big deal, and proves nothing, it's just another customer.

My point from the beginning has been that the manufacturer sets it targeted demographic.

People buy cars that they were not targeted for, it happens all the time.

I don't see what point you are trying to make, if any.
