GM beat Mazda to market by announcing it will have the Turbo GXP available this Summer

Big deal...anyone who know anything about the Miata's tremendous success knows it isnt about big horsepower and going faster than other cars. It's about a true pure roadster....nothing more. It's only a matter of time before GM tries to make the SOL a cheater corvette with big hp, all kinds of electronics, big price increases and fluff that true roadster buyers don't want.

This is essentially the mistake every Miata competitor has made...the don't understand the basics of a great roadster and why the Miata is the best selling roadster in history.

Way to jump into the middle of a debate and take my stuff out of context.

My post was in response to MX5rules who owns a 1999 Mazda Miata tuned it, and is making a big deal about the speed advantage he allegedly has over a stock Solstice/Sky.

The MX5 is pretty packed with gizmos by the way, as was the NB Miata. Something I learned when my computer kept breaking down on me.

Your are also ignoring the MazdaSpeed Miata.

GM has said repeatedly it is committed to keeping the base Solstice pure. There is no reason to think it will not.

By the way, what Miata competitors? You had the Mr2 which was, in fact, a fairly simple car. The S2000 competes with the higher echelons. The BMW and Porsche (which is a big sales success) roadster are certainly not Mazda competitors either.

I think it will be a solid car....I hope not an over engineered one....but also concisder the Miata has had over a 10 year history to work out the initial bugs as well...and as I recall.....the first year they came out (90 or 91)..the craze was the same for it..hard to find...when you did...they brought a premium..until supply caught up with demand.... I believe the Sol...will keep is basic roadster roots that it has started..you can option it anyway you want..bare bones or fully loaded with the conveniences most american drivers want today.............the after market vendors will catch up..many are now...there is already CAIs, exhausts, catbacks, lowering springs on the market for the car.....

and remember this is a niche market....selling 10k units a year on the long run is the best I think any company can expect.....not every one wants, desires, or cares for a two seater roadster.....I will wave at every roadster owner I pass or am passed by...regardless of the model....cheers!

Yeah, it's just great to see more roadsters out there, period. Any driver's car is a welcome sight during my commute.

I just noticed though... every time someone calls it a "Sol", I think of the Honda Civic Del Sol, which is not a good thing. But it was sort of a rival to the Miata in the 90s, so I'm sure that many Miata enthusiasts think "Del Sol" when they see "Sol".

Could we call abbreviate it to "Sols" instead?

Just to show you guys that I'm not a basher....and since I posted for the first time my experience trying to compare. I want to fill you in on my MX-5's service visit today. I opened the hood just cuz I'm a total cargeek and I felt like it this morning and to my HORROR i found a thin film of oil covering everything...HMMM...not normal, so I took her in and showed the service advisor, who tried to convince me that it was the engine shine stuff they put on when the car is new...So I though to myself this guy is a freaking MORON and I asked to see the service manager, who agreed with me that what we were looking at was not normal. Mazda gave me a loaner car which I though was great even it it is a Chevy Malibu, and later in the afternoon the service advisor called me back and said the cam postion sensor was leaking and they had to order the part from mazda. hopefully they will have the part tomorrow and I'll have my car back by that afternoon. So I have experienced my first bug and I'm a bit embarrased after all the raving I've done about this car. OH...I've got 1748 miles on the clock.

anything can happen to any car at any time. If you had bought the Solstice, you'd be hitching a ride everywhere. Regardless of how many Pontiacs I have bought at our local GM dealer (and it was a few up until a few years ago), not once was I ever offered a car to drive during warranty work or for GM problems.

I like the looks of the Solstice, but based on warranty and things like a loaner from Mazda when you need work done on your car... I would lean more toward the MX5 if I was in the market for such a car. Quite honestly, the used 350Z roadsters are coming down into the high 20's at this point and I'd opt for a used one of those before either of these cars.

Maybe Pao can chime in on the Pontiac Solstice warranty provisions on loaners.

While I never had to use it with my Saturn, the Saturn warranty was clear you got a loaner if the car had to stay in the shop for warranty repairs. My Saturn dealer had several courtesy cars - L series and Vues - for that purpose.

When I had to leave the Miata in the shop I did get an Economy rental voucher. The loaner voucher was good only for Economy's cheapest model. In my case, I wound up getting a Ford ZX something and a Daewoo Lanos, both awful little cars.

I am no fan at all of the Nissan.

Coupes with their roofs removed never make very good roasters. Get a ground-up convertible if you're buying it for the driving experience.
