I too was concerned about the 80's problem with the 8/4 cylinder effort. I posed this question to the local GM service manager and was advised the old problem with that system was oil was not being distributed to the cylinders properly when 4 cylinders shut down. The new system is totally redesigned and is warranted for 100,000 miles.

Regarding the 4.8 versus the 5.3 with fuel management. I had an 05 Silverado with the 4.8 and had all the power I needed. Average gas mileage was 17.5. Now I have the 2007 Silverado with 5.3 and fuel management (2,000 miles) and have an average MPG of 14.5. You do the math. I drive alot of highway miles and do not pull anything.

You will get better mpg after it gets broken in. My buddy at work is only getting 13.1 mpg in his 06' Toyota on the highway. Is your Silverado shutting down to 4-cylinders on cruise control ?????

Local Dealer says gas mileage should improve at 5,000 to 7500 miles.
Yes, at cruise when on a level ground, the system shuts down to 4 cylinders. But as soon as there is a slight grade or head wind it is back to 8 cylinders.

Yeah the DOD system I heard is quite sensitive. I'd like to see GM improve the sensitivity of this system. The good thing is this fall the 2-mode will be available and should jump fuel economy gains to 25 mpg avg. 30 mpg might be possible on a level street with the 2-mode and DOD.

I have been looking for a reason to get back into a GM as I grew up on them. However, due to the many quality issues I went to foreign makes and have been pretty happy. Well now that the general has come out with these two pick-ups, I really like both of them more so the GMC styling. Now that the Tundra is coming out I think that might be the better choice. I think GM's trucks stack up well with the tundra however, as with all the generals products you worry how they'll hold up after five years. Believe me I've had my share of GM cars that at some point you have to open the passenger door to get in the car because the other door doesnt'work . How do others feel about these two pick-ups (Tundra/Chevy-GMC) Do you trust GM's quality now?

...we invite you to jump in the existing Toyota Tundra vs Chevy Silverado discussion. We expect this to heat up as the Tundra begins to make its presence.

I've had my 2007 Silverado Ext Cab Z-71 for two weeks now and i'm totally impressed with it. This will be my 10th Chevy pickup and other then some very minor issues that were covered by the warranty these trucks are worth the investment. My past trucks were used for Search and Rescue work hauling both team members and equipment into the "back 40" and there was never an issue. The trucks did their job. That is a big selling feature with me.

I have a 2000 Sierra with the 5.3 and made a trip from Oregon to Denver and back during the holidays. I got 20 mpg overall. I get about 17-18 mpg in normal mixed driving around here. I am very pleased. The truck has been trouble free except for that rear spring slap some Sierra/Silverados get. I was told I could spend $100 to have some lubricant applied which may be of some benefit but since it only happens on really rough roads I haven't done anything about it.
