When I called GM to bitch about a problem I was having (minor problem though) they gave me a coupon for a free service... doesn't fully make up for the inconvinience, but it helps...

If you are ready to buy now and crave a 6 speed just buy a Denali. The 6.2 with the 6 speed is awesome when driven aggressively and with a light foot I get 17+ average mpg.
Not fantastic mileage, but I'm pleased considering the size and weight of the vehicle. So far mine has been trouble free.

I prefer the looks of the Tahoe's exterior desigh (particularly headlights) to the Yukon, and I don't really want to pay for the extra trim on the Escalade. Thus I am wondering when the 2008's will be out, and if they will incorporate the six speed. I test drove the '07 with the four speed really did not feel it was adequate.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your vehicle.

I've read many conflicting reports about when the 900 platform with the 5.3L will get the 6 speed tranny. Some say 08 and others say not before 09.

If you thought the 5.3L wasn't adequate, I don't know if a 6spd is going to change your opinion. The six speed will have one gear lower than the current four and one more OD gear. It will be a little quicker off the line but it will still be a mid-range dog as the middle gears will essentially be unchanged. If you want more power, get a suburban and order the 6.0L

I would also like to see some additional upgrades in the '08. Bluetooth being one...

My '96 Yukon vs 07' Tahoe gas mileage by saratogalake

I've had my 2007 Tahoe now for almost 8 months. I have a wee bit over 25,000 miles on it. 80% of that is highway mileage. The best long distance mileage I've seen is about 19.5 MPG on a trip from New York to Florida and back. I made the same trip in my '96 Yukon several times and averaged as good as 24.8 MPG. I was able to go almost 600 miles on a tank of regular gas. Both vehicles have the same 350 CI engine and they also had the same rear end axel ratio. So.. My question is.. why did I get so much better gas mileage on the Yukon?? When I sold it, it had 143,000 miles on it.. Could it be my '07 Tahoe isn't really broken it yet?? Maybe I can expect better mileage after 50,000 miles?? What do you all think??? Steve

At 25,000 miles your engine is probably as "broken in" as it's going to be. Have your driving habits changed? Did you make all those trips at the same time of the year (i.e. winter as opposed to Fall or Summer)?

I believe your 96' and 07' Tahoes were completely different animals in many ways. First the motors are totally different. Your 1996 likely had a 5.7L pushrod iron block motor. The 2007 has an alum. non-pushrod motor that is only 5.3L and does not perform as well in the middle of the power curve as the old 5.7L motor, likely causing you to be heavier on the pedal. The specs are totally different too including 400lbs of additional weight. Something else to consider is fuel. Much of the fuel we burn today has ethonal, not very common in 1996.
1996 - 5134lbs
2007 - 5524lbs
1996 - 250hp/335fpt
2007 - 320hp/340fpt
1996 - EPA Est. 13/17
2007 - EPA Est. 15/20

Count yourself lucky with 19mpg. Not many are getting anywhere close to that.
