Had a friend change the fluid and that seems to have helped - at least buys me some time. I would go to somebody - anybody but VW. They bend you over the barrel on EVERYTHING. For instance my Passat needed new serpentine belt tensioner replaced. VW $540.00 just for the pulley and install! plus belt. Had local mechanic replace it $250.00 with belt. 6k seems like 2k too much - my first replacement fall 2010 was 4k VW and it was under extended warranty.
Wanted to trade the car in but VW dealer does not want it- no surprise they know whats wrong with it. Wanted to get 2012 Passat TDI with manual transmission but without decent trade in I'll just patch this thing together. Love the TDI but not VW and would NEVER buy another auto transmission any on a diesel. They cannot take the torque. I also have 2000 Jetta manual 48+ MPG. Too bad VW hired the Yugo engineers to design their auto transmissions.

Good luck getting a stick on a 2012 TDI.
I've been trying to find one to test drive and buy since they introduced the 2012s. There are none available in the NY market. What does that tell you? It's not a priority for VW.
In the interim, I've bought a car for myself (non VW), and am looking for a car for my spouse. However, I've become pretty disenchanted with a number of aspects of VW, the track record of their cars, the company and its poor performance and warranty profile, and at least one of the dealers.
It looks like it's all pretty cavalier at this company. And from what I read above... I'm even more persuaded that VW is a risky investment.

Just sold my automatic 2011 Jetta TDI because I buy a new car every year. 39-48 mpg was my in town and Interstate numbers with avg of 39 over all week after week. Put it on Craigs list and sold in two days and got small fortune for it. Only 3000.00 less than I paid for it after just under a year. Loved that Jetta and after coming out of Hondas for years and years, which all I ever did to them was change oil, rotate tires and add gas. Jetta flawless car in every respect not one problem in a year and 16,000 miles. Bought Passat gas engine yesterday and WOW what a upgrade so far as luxury. Had one day but car is great and seems to be so quiet and solid. Based on MPGOMATIC web site which lets you compare two cars with cost of gas and mileage I opted for gas this time as in my area diesel is almost 90 cents more and once you approach a dollar difference with figuring about 25 mpg for Passat and 39 for Jetta you do not save much with diesel over a year and 20,000 miles which I drive annually most of the time. For the around 4000.00 premium I would have paid for the Diesel I can buy a bunch of gas. One thing I have researched though and was true in my case that the diesel Jetta at least as of today for 2011 was worth 6000 more than the gas Jetta when I started looking at KBB prices. The quality of VW and their intent to be in the same class as Honda and Toyota is evident to me at least in the quality of the Jetta.
I had 2011 Jetta TDI/DSG Sunroof now have Passat SE auto/ 2.5 sunroof.
Just one satisfied owner throwing out some of my opinions which I hope helps.

Come to Long Island, NY, Legend VW has a couple manual TDI Passat's in stock.
I just picked up an automatic SEL TDI, in black with tan. Actually picking it up tonight and cannot wait.
Been driving VW for 14 years and would not change it for anything. Traded in my 2010 CC for the passat and have a Taureg with 41K miles on it and never had any major issues. And any issues I have had have been covered. Love the way the vehicles drive
test drive a sonata, camry, optima, accord and any other competitor in the same class. Then go drive the TDI and V6 passat, its no contest.
