Hello. Anyone driven on the highway and had all the windows closed but opened one of the rear windows all the way and had this massive pulsing/thumping form the air coming in? I'm no rocket scientist, but I think it's from the air coming in and pressurizing the interior and when the pressure gets to a certain point, it pushes back, releasing the pressure, then this repeats, hence the pulsing effect. I was riding in the back while my wife was driving and my sister was sitting shotgun. They said it was a really painful pressure in the head. I felt it to, but my curiosity have a hold of me =). Anyone noticed this? I bet a child would really get it good. It's quite something. Loving the 5 otherwise. Not missing the '88 pathfinder Bert |

If you put the sunroof on vent or crack one of the front windows, then the pulsing noise/pressure goes away. Interesting side effect of the design. I bet the engineers didn't test that scenario in the wind tunnels. |

There is a resonance that is dependent on the size & shape of the enclosed volume. If you change the shape of the volume by opening a window, the resonance frequency changes. I get these standing waves in my Honda at a certain speed with the windows open a specific amount. You can google "standing wave" for more information. David

Replying to: kw_da (Jun 19, 2006 3:33 pm) Another question I have is are there seat covers available for the front seats in the 5? I know you can get all six from Mazda, but I just want the front two. And they need to work with the air bags in the seats. (this is the down fall of regular covers) Anyone have a suggestion Bert

If you have kids riding in the back and need a darker color to show less skuffing, use the color up front in combination with a brighter color or pattern to harmonize. This would work fine if used only on the 3rd row seats, which are like the old jump seats in limos. If you later opt for leather seats you can also use a color other than black or a combination of colors. One good combo is leather bolsters and nubby-suade seat inserts. They also offer door trim panels to match which go above the armrests. Check out: classicsofttrim.com and see if your area has a shop that installs their leather kits. Go direct, not to a dealer who adds $400 to the bill just to deliver your car to the shop. In the meantime, use a fleece throw over the back seats when carrying toddlers and small dogs. Keeps dog hair off the fabric. Found in most home furnishing stores at $5 to $10. And last, if you carry a small dog in the middle row I strongly suggest using three foam bed pillows positioned vertically side-by-side on the floor to provide protection for your puppy if you have to make a panic stop. They are thrown forward and can be injured hitting the front seat backs. Buy two throws the same color and have pillow cases made from one for a neater appearance. I dislike black interiors so getting custom covers would be my first priority. fowler3 |

Has anyone bought any of the extra stuff that is usually offered, i.e., extended warranty, underbody protection, interior protection, lo-jack system, etc..? What are your experiences or thoughts?
