On the VA side, there is no law protecting the consumer, so the dealers will charge whatever the market will bear (usually around $200 to $300). The Fitzgerald people also have a Mazda dealership in Annapolis, not sure if that is closer to you. I'd stay away from the Mazda dealership in Laurel, MD, those guys are slimy. When I was buy our Mazda5 last year, I called a few dealerships in MD to see if I can get a better deal. The sales manager at Laurel give me a price quote of MSRP plus a $2k "Market Adjustment Fee". I think he realized that he met an educated consumer when I started laughing at him on the phone and telling him that no one else in the metro DC area has tacked on a "Market Adjustment Fee". Then I found out that the Mazda5 he was trying to sell me already had almost 500 miles on it. You can also try College Park Mazda. I've heard good things about them on the Mazda3 fourms. |

I don't recall anyone in this forum cross-shopping these two vehicles, but they are almost identical in interior volume, have similar engine and drivetrain layouts and are close in price. The HHR lacks a third row seat and sliding doors which is the whole draw of the Mazda5 to me, but the HHR has styling that stands out in a crowd. In the test the HHR kicked the 5 in a straight line, (the Mazda was "downright anemic") but the 5 spanked the HHR in the slalom and skid pad. The editors described the HHR's handling as "awful" and "boat-like". On the other hand, one editor said about the Mazda5: "I can’t say it handles as well as a sports car, but at least it’s as predictable as a sports car.” Overall, they picked the Mazda despite it's weak acceleration and slightly higher price.

I have been following the discussions and road tests and this reoccurring statement that the Mazda 5's engine is underpowered really bugs me. We have a 5 and even fully loaded I never had an unsafe feeling because I could not accelerate fast enough or didn't have any power reserve (and we have the automatic trans). It's all a matter of pressing down the pedal enough or downshifting manually. I am German and learned driving on the Autobahn and I find it funny that the Mazda 5 isn't even sold with the US version's 2.3l engine back home but only with a 1.8 liter or a 2 liter diesel. Yet, none of the reviews I read nor the comments from my father, who bought one after we told him about ours, mention lack of power and acceleration. If it can handle the German Autobahn and high traffic density with smaller engines, why do so many here believe it should have a larger engine? I actually wish they sold the Diesel here or even the 1.8l because the gas mileage is so much better at 37 mpg and 34 mpg respectively. After all, it's not supposed to be a sports car but an economic, versatile family mover.

Isn't a need but a want. 50hp is all we need...500 is what we want. Looking at a car like an appliance and so much hp makes no sense (I own/have owned MB diesels...maybe the slowest group of cars sold in the US along w/ aircooled VWs) but a car is more subjective. I currently drive a waste vegetable oil car that gets me close to 250 miles per gallon of diesel bought. I also have a wrx putting out over 300HP which makes no practical sense but I sure do enjoy it! And that is why many of us are here to talk about our appliances.

I used to drive a Lacia HF Integrale back home, basically a street legal version of a Rallye rocket, and boy do I miss it! But now with a family and the unavoidable accessories my priorities have changed. What I was ranting about was that some people here and several car reviewers seem to want the all purpose universal vehicle: Size of the 5, inside room of an RV, power of a Ferrari and gas mileage of a Prius... Sounds like science fiction to me.

Well, I took our rear facing infant seat and my 3 year olds jumper seat and placed them into a Mazda5 today. They both fit with plenty of room to spare. This made me very happy that if we do go the way of the 5 I won't be getting a Shiatzu from my daughter anymore. Odie Odie's Carspace Garage |
