From the Motortrend webpage:
"This year's field, the largest to date, included a diverse offering from sports cars to minivans, and a price range from just over $14,000 to almost $75,000. Only truly new or substantially revised cars were considered with the condition that they be available for public sale by January 1, 2006.
The 2006 Motor Trend Car of the Year competition included the following models: Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Azera, Hyundai Sonata, Infiniti M35/M45, Kia Rio, Lexus GS, Lexus IS, Lincoln Zephyr, Mazda 5, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Mercury Milan, Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Avalon, Volkswagen Jetta, and Volkswagen Passat."

Thanks for the link--I'll have to check out that edition at the newsstand today. Thanks also to bobw3 for the clarification on the Motor Trend C.O.Y. shootout. Now that it's snowed for real in my area (Baltimore MD 'burbs), I'm interested to hear about actual snow traction and handling from anyone who has driven their 5 in the snow thus far. I'm not yet an owner, but am looking to buy after the new year.

I am in Edmonton, Alberta and we had a couple inches of snow yesterday along with temperatures around -23C (-10F). That has made for lot's of packed snow and ice on the roads. I haven't bought snow tires for my M5 so getting started at a light often involves a little tire spinning but overall I think it handles just as well or better than any other car I've owned. The ABS performed well but it scared me a bit the first time it kicked in. I am used to older ABS that doesn't have such a high pulsation rate.
