Used 2007 Sport by drbrop

We are interested in buying a used 2007 Sport Automatic. After reading many posts about the new features on the 2008, particularly the added A/C vents, I am concerned that the kids in the second row will "bake" in the 2007. Those of you who've experienced both, is there a discernable difference in climate control with the 2008?

I think I can get into the 2007 for around $14K, so there is a large cost incentive to buy used, as usual.

Thanks

I have a 2007, and there really hasn't been a problem with A/C in the 2nd and 3rd rows even without vents back there. All you need to do is make sure the front vents are pointed up all the way, so the cold air is directed up and over the front row seats and can reach the back. I always asked my passengers back there if they were getting enough cool air, and I've never heard a complaint.
Now, the car will become a furnace if left in the sun, and it will take a while to cool down, but I've found the Mazda-branded reflective windshield screen to be a great help. Some folks complained that it doesn't stay in place, but I suspect that's because they hadn't figured out that you're supposed to flip down the visors, which holds it up. It rolls up to store between the 2nd row seats.
The worst thing about the 5 w/r/t heat is that Mazda used a lot of materials in the interior that outgas toxic chemicals. I don't think they've corrected that in the '08 either. UV light slowly breaks down the cloths and plastics, accelerating the release of carcinogens and neurotoxins. While the windows naturally filter out most of the UV light, more than a few folks have tinted the windows of their 5s. See http://www.healthycar.org/vehicle.details.php?getrecno=116.
I drive a minute with the windows open during the summer.

the vents are a nice to have but in my mind I would go for the 2008 just for the 5 speed auto box and the better headlights available. you will save a fair bit on gas (real world driving) over the years with that transmission. I have a 2006 and will buy another one when they offer the stability control as a option. The auto climate control i could take or leave but love the auto wipers. get then to throw in the back privacy cover too.

    Gear Ratios by tomt7

    Good afternoon,

I've just bought an '08 Mazda5 and while I am generally pleased with it, one thing that is bothering me is the gear ratio setup.

I usually drive standard and most cars I've owned run about 24-2500 rpm at 100km/h (62 mph for those south of the border) but I've noticed the M5 runs over 2900 at the same speed in 5th. I can understand setting the lower gears a bit lower for more hp because of the weight of the 5 on a 3 chassis but in 5th? I would have expected a big drop in rpm.

Any one else notice this. Basically its burning more fuel than it needs to.

    Tom.

Coming upon on 2 years - 2007 Mazda 5 Summary by tlong

We bought a 2007 Mazda 5 Touring in November 2007. After about 30K miles and 2 years, here is a summary:

We really like this car. I can't believe it is not more popular. It's a shame Mazda doesn't advertise it. If Honda was selling this it would probably be selling 50K-75K a year rather than 20K units.

    The good stuff:

Great value for the price. Pretty fuel efficient, even with the 4speed auto in the 07 model - we have seen about 30mpg on the highway and usually average 23-25mpg in mixed driving. Engine is refined and pretty quiet for a 4 cylinder. Handles fabulously for what it is; the Mazda 3/5 platform is like a poor man's BMW. This is probably my favorite feature of the car. It's not too low and not too high like an SUV. It's shorter than my Acura TL but has way more space efficiency. Love the interior flexibility. Love the sliding doors. We have had it two years and have not even had it back to the dealer once, it's reliability has been flawless. Great visibility. Very maneuverable; very tight turning circle.

    Needs improving:

Some of the stuff that was already fixed - more armrests, center console, heater vents, etc.
Plastic is kind of cheap and scratches easily, especially around door panels. Distance between brake pedal and gas pedal a little tight, took getting used to. Occasional thump in front suspension when going over a bump slowly while turning - need to get this looked at. Driver's seat not that comfortable, sometimes tough to get a good driving position. Could always use a bit more power but don't want to sacrifice fuel economy.

In summary, we're pretty happy. We also looked at the CRV but didn't want to pay $5K more for similar features, and we liked the lower height and sliding doors. If you like an agile smaller ride but want quite a bit of space, this is your car!

    tlong,

It's so funny that you mention, that odd "thump" "pop" sound when going over a bump or up/down a driveway slowly while turning. I occasionally hear this noise as well and have taken it to (2) different dealerships only to get the same response every time. "Cannot duplicate it, everything seems normal with all suspension components" If you take yours and find out what this problem is please let me know or visa-versa. Thanks!

    Exploding Moonroof by kuderich

This just happened to me in my wife's 2008 Mazda5. It sounded like a gun blast in the cabin of the car and a woosh of air. The hole is the size of a soft ball directly in the center of the moonroof. The car is at the Dealers now. 4,100 miles and I don't know if it is safe to drive. My 14 month old daughter was in the middle row seat. Luckily she was sleeping with Elmo on top of her. Tiny pieces of glass went everywhere. The dealer/ District Customer Service Rep. told my wife that someone threw something out of the cabin! He did'nt even bother to come look at it himself ( he saw a digital picture). This is the only way they will deal with this because of the possible safety issue that would arise from accepting some kind of responsibility. This is total bull. I contacted the NHTSA on this issue as well as calling the local TV stations.
