Hi all.

I've been lurking here for a while as my wife and I consider getting a Mazda5. My wife really likes this car, but I've been encouraging her to hold off until the 07's come out. (I've always worried about buying the first model year of a car.) Now, however, I'm wondering if maybe we shouldn't just pick up an 06. It looks like they've held up pretty well. Also, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a lot of new features in the 07. I'm thinking that this might be the right time to get a deal on an 06.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

It is true buying first model year of a car can be tricky, but this is my second first model year Mazda (04 Mazda3 and 06 Mazda5) and I haven't had any problems with either cars.

The mechanics of the Mazda5 comes from the Mazda3, so I would consider them 'proven'. Really the biggest issue I've had so far is trying to find accessaries for the Mazda5.

Something else to keep in mind. I believe the 07's come with a 3yr/36k miles bumper to bumper warranty and a 5yr/60k miles powertrain warranty. The 06 has a 4 yr/50k mile bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty. I personally perfer the longer bumper to bumper warranty.

I am in the same boat as you. I was really hoping for a diesel option.

Now I would like to just find a used option and save some money, but the few that are on the market are being sold by dealers and are in the same price ranges as new models.

I am still worried about putting my kids in the back seat so close to the bumper, but we are running short of options and I think the 5 is the safest and most practical way to go. Good luck on getting the deal you want.

For your typical, run of the mill "Genuine" accessories such as floor mats, windshield shades, etc, check with your Mazda dealer or online here:
http://www.mazdastuff.com/directory.cfm?CategoryID=247

For actual performance parts such as exhaust systems, short shifters, suspension mods, etc specifically for the Mazda5, go here:

And concerning the rear seat safety, I wouldn't worry about it. I searched quick but could not find it... I once read somewhere that the rear impact protection on this car is exceptional, contrary to what one might think with it's proximity to the rear seats. I do know that while the Mazda5 has not been crash tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, yet, in Japanese and European tests it has proven to be a particularly safe car. Also, I found this elsewhere on the boards... a quote from another Mazda5 owner....

"Rear impact?
I just got home from being rear ended in our new Mazda 5. While waiting at a stoplight, an older Ford Escort ran into us at about 15 or 20 kph. Her front bumper was destroyed. Our rear bumper showed only minor scratches; no deformation at all.

I read somewhere the Mazda5's frame structure at the back has been designed to meet the new German requirements, which are higher than for North America, especially in quarter-angle crashes.

Why would anybody buy seat covers that look like the standard trim? If anything, I would get custom-made seat covers in a color or fabric combination which gives relief to all that black!

In our case, we wanted to protect the seats so that don't show wear too quickly, we wanted something that was easy to zip off and wash when necessary (i realize that the seat backs do zip off), and, though the seat covers are not all black, i don't mind the existing black seats at all. Custom sounds expensive, but maybe i am wrong.

Not to shift the blame to my wife, but she is the clean freak in our twosome.

But, different strokes..

This reminds me that when i was 7 years old. my Dad has a a morris 1300. no seat belts (back in 1973) and was rear ended by a single deck bus (much like UK bus) in HK. and Dad put his arms around my mom. I was seating at the back and got thrown up a bit. but otherwise. none of us got seriously hurt. The morris was destroyed but rear impact is defintely not as bad as frontal impact.
