You have no idea how it burns to see people mention $483 in tax"! CA sales tax in my county is 9.75. For our $15,950 purchase, sales tax was $1,555, license $183, other reg fees (registration, smog, CHP, "Auto Theft and/or DUI Crime Deterrence Program," "Abandoned Vehicle Fee," etc....) totaled $87, for a "grand total" of $270.
CA residents can go here and plug in the purchase price to determine tax and dmv fees:

The mazda5 is pretty popular in the bay area, since it's urban: tight streets and parking spaces, old houses with old narrow driveways (like mine). I suspect that demand dropped off due to the economy, and left dealers with inventory to sell before the 2010 comes out. Most of the sitting inventory is the upgraded models.
When we were shopping, there were no sport models available without the popular package, but our local dealer really wanted to make the sale (maybe has a volume bonus coming up?). At one point he offered us a touring for $16,900 (to tie another dealer's price for a sport AT with popular package), but it was navy, and I wanted silver. He didn't have a silver one to actually sell us, but was looking. On Weds afternoon he called to say a new shipment had arrived, including a silver base sport AT (we saw it with the plastic still all over it). He offered it at $16,500, we countered with $15,950, and he accepted.

Where are you located and did they give you a price or just that one was coming in in the right color? I am in Virginia and the best price I have gotten within 200 miles is $18,100 plus tax for a Sport Automatic. I haven't really pushed the issue because I have been waiting for the "CARS" program to kick. What kind of prices are people getting in this area? I saw the one that said they got one for $17144 out the door at Castle. But Castle never even responded to my inquiry. Which makes me wonder if someone really got $17144?

We live in the Northeast and have put our deposit on a Touring w/cargo net, bumper guard, wheel locks and all weather floor mats for $18,500+. The $18,100 sounds high to me for a Sport. We made our deal and then asked the dealers how they were working the clunkers deals. The one who let us put a deposit down and arranged for our financing before the clunkers starts is the one we went with. We should be picking up our new car on Friday or Monday. I was worried that since the Mazda5 is the only minivan to qualify for clunkers that they would go fast so that's why we squared everything away prior to the details coming out on the 23rd or 24th. BTW, we did all of our deal making via email with 3 different dealerships in our area.

Your VA price quote is right in line with what I've been quoted by multiple dealers in CT and NJ after I subtract the invoice cost of options for the Sport AT I've asked about. I had a similar experience with Castle in MD - I talked to an internet sales rep initially, who seemed enthusiastic to help me, then didn't hear back from him even after several follow up calls on my part. Ourisman took a while to get back to me as well, and when they did they offered some interesting info: they used to have a lot of 5s on their lot but they've been flying out the door recently - down to only 2 now. Neither of those matched my specs, but I suspect their pricing may be higher going forward than it was even last month given their significantly reduced inventory.

I'm also doing the "CARS" program. My dealer called me last night and informed me that Mazda is kicking in an extra $500 incentive for "CARS" trade-ins so I would ask your dealer about that!
A $5000 trade-in for a 1994 Jeep with engine problems & no AC sounds like a great deal to me .

By the way if anyone wants a good starting # as in the most you should pay. Sam's Club has a club price of $100 over invoice.

Called Mazda Customer Service and they said there is NO CFC cash. This may have been a marketing gimick by your dealer. Or Mazda isn't advertising this extra $500.

That's odd. We had already agreed on a price long before this and I made a deposit to lock it in. I don't see what the dealer has to gain by giving me an extra $500 off after the fact.

FYI - I checked the Cash for Clunkers Twitter page and they confirmed the $500 incentive from Mazda:
