Depends on the dealer, I've seen doc fees literally all over the place. It certainly changes the final price, I'd work to get it lowered if you can

Some states limit what the dealers can charge. For example, where in live (VA) the dealers normally charge $399 for processing fee. Across the border in MD, it's capped at $99 by law. All else being equal, I save $300 just by driving a few miles more.

We're looking to purchase a 2009 M5 touring, white, with:
DVD installed + 4 headphones
roof rack and roof carrier
2" hitch installed

I check & the TMV for the touring WITH DVD is little over $20,000. Other features weren't offered for checking TMV.

The guy I'm working with at the dealership has come back with this number for all the features we've asked for (his quote here): "The Mazda5 with all the goodies that you want would cost $24,368 OTD (that includes taxes tags, DVD, Hitch, rack etc..)". (the dealer is in VA, we live in NC but all the dealerships near us closed - this guy has been great to deal with so far, going to check competition though)

I'm planning to offer to up our cash down payment by $1000 (from $5k to $6k) while at the same time asking him to drop his final number by $2k. Is this wise/reasonable? In addition, it's already been established that we are bringing our own financing (penfed) and that we'll be participating in the cash 4 clunkers program.

Thanks for any advice... I've never done this before I know it's a buyers market and I want to get the best deal we can.

I think the price he gave you is a bit high (although I have no idea what the roof rack and hitch costs), so I would try to get the price down. I feel the best way is shopping around for competition. I shopped around 5 other states (mostly by email) getting prices before I went to my local dealers. The prices ranged my almost $2000!! Getting low prices from different dealers really helped my negotiations...heck, I didn't even really negotiate with anyone, just asked if they could beat the lowest price.

Correct me if I am wrong but the last time I checked the trailer hitch option is not available from Mazda and it is not recommended. I know that they are aftermarket hitches out there for our MZ5s but I find it interesting that the dealership you are talking to is willing to take on that liability of going against Mazda's recommendations and install a trailer hitch. If I were you I would research it further, I would bet money the saleman is just trying to get your money and at the end let you down by saying that he is sorry for overlooking the fact that Mazda does not offer or recommend a trailer hitch on the Mazda5.

We made it clear we want the hitch for a bike rack and have not had issue with that so far, but I've sent a clarification question.

I will check other dealerships, just wondered if I'm in the ball park. I've also returned my counter-proposal, so we'll see what happens.

I appreciate the feedback.

I love how they trow numbers at you. My dealer claims this week there is a $3500 incentive on the mazda5. I looked at a touring without any options and am being quoted $18,140 sale price this is before tax and fee's

I also looked at a GT with nav system and was quoted a price if $21,895 before tax and fees. This is as low as I have gotten so far. Should I keep pushing or is this a pretty good deal? Thanks for any help I was ripped of on my car 5 years ago. Live , learn and trying to do better this time.

I think that's a pretty good price on the Touring, but I think you can do better on the Grand Touring. It depends what the fees are, sometimes those are outrageous...make sure they tell you what fees will be included.

If anyone is looking for a Mazda5 in the midwest, specifically a Grand Touring, let me now. I've been talking with a lot of dealers and can put you in touch with ones offering the best prices. Just thought I'd offer...
