I just purchased an 07 Mazda5 Touring with 34k on it, and when I got it from the dealer it had about 1/2 a tank in it. I topped it off and set the trip computer. I filled it up about 1/4 tank later and computed my mpg - 16. I'm now at about half a tank with 120 miles on the trip computer. Driving is almost all city, but I'm very light on the throttle. I would expect at least 18-22mpg given how I drive. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the car I just bought, or if it's bad gas or something else. I know the car sat at the dealership for a while before we bought it, and that they replaced the battery before sale. Would old gas or a rebooted ECU (from the battery being unhooked) result in such poor mileage? I don't think I have a sticking caliper as it's not pulling to one side or slowing down quickly. I'm going to take it out this weekend and try to burn through the rest of the tank and put some new fuel in it to see if that helps things. Any other suggestions? Replying to: gmjung (Dec 01, 2008 12:53 pm) If your MZ5 sat at the dealer for a while like you say it did, then I bet the low MPG is due to the old gas. When I bought my MZ5 used as well, it sat on the lot for at least 3 months before I bought it. My first two tanks only yielded about 250-260 miles. After that I usually average about 22-24 city/hwy and 26-29 hwy only or 280-320 miles per tank. I drive mine pretty hard though, hardly ever speed limit - 80mph constantly on freeways

thanks for the insight. Hopefully it's just old gas then. I'll update when I run it dry and get some fresh fuel in there.

I've owned my 2007 for a year and a half. Combined city/highway has always been around 17 MPG. The dealer says there's nothing wrong. I can't believe it's all due to my driving style; I'm just not that aggressive. Tire pressure is ok. Drives me crazy! I'd gladly make the car less powerful if it would save on gas. Cheaply priced gas is usually poor quality as well, and does not yield as good MPG, IMHO. I know its difficult to dish out a little bit more money on higher priced (higher quality) gas because of our economic crisis status, but maybe that is the problem with your MZ5, or perhaps a faulty gas cap and/or a dirty air filter. What type of oil do you use? Stay with the reccomended 5W20 weight because this thin oil is recommended and put in place to improve fuel economy. Let us know if any changes. I simply LOVE it and LOVE to drive it!   Anyway, recently came back from a road trip to North Carolina for the four-day weekend. I went up to 420 miles twice. And I filled up with 13 gallons. So, that gave me highway mileage of 32.30! Significantly higher than the 28 highway EPA figure! So, I'm very happy with that. I live in NYC, however, so my city mileage is lower than others: around 21, which is still accurate by EPA standards.

I doubt that can account for a 10MPG difference than most people. The car just had its 6000 mile service. What could be wrong with the gas cap? Until last week, I was using the OEM oil from the dealer. At the service visit I asked them to switch to synthetic. Haven't noticed any radical changes. Replying to: daharon (Dec 02, 2008 12:33 pm) HMMM! Interesting....your MZ5 is fairly new too! 6K miles is very new, but not still within the break in period, which sometimes accounts for low MPG. I dont know about Hess gas (probably an East coast only station), but Sunoco does have good gas IMO. So that is out of the question. You just switched to Synthetic, which is usually a better oil and returns better MPG (as long as it is the same weight). Gas cap, if faulty would let vapor escape from gas tank, therefore, evaporating your gas more quickly. However, if that was the problem I am almost sure that the check engine light would go on. Also at 6K miles I dont think your air filter is dirty. I cant think of anything else that you or I have mentioned that would cause low MPG, besides ECM not programmed correctly or odometer malfunction. Do you have stock wheel and tire set up? How do you calculate your MPG's?

Last week, we took the car from Portland, ME to NYC & back. I averaged about 30 MPG. This was with 2 adults, 3 kids & a full luggage.

I rented a Mazda5 automatic for the 3-day weekend.
